Temp pigment and melanistic geckos

karosenberg Jan 06, 2004 04:26 PM

So, just to start a discussion, if a person incubates at 80 for the first week and then lowered the temps to say 74 for the remainder, would you get a melanistic gecko? Would that gecko die in the egg at that temp, or how low can you go?

I’ve read that 95 and 75 are the high and low fatal temps. I’ve had the best luck hatching eggs that were kept at a constant temperature.
I’d hate to see people loose their eggs in an attempt to make darker/lighter leos. The best way to do this would be though genetics, not incubation temperatures. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. I also hear of the wild caught geckos being very melanistic. Why do you suppose this is- years and years of trying to be inconspicuous I suppose?

in the wild at least. I don’t think a HCT or albino would fair to well with predators around. It’s kind of like batman and robin. Who’s going to get noticed first? The guy in the black suit or the guy in the red suit?
