I had a surprise in my panther tank today

Brad Alexander Jan 06, 2004 07:41 PM

I recently introduced my female for the first time about a week or so ago. I never once saw any interest from Samson this entire time. Then today, he had Delilah pinned to the ground and was definitely taking care of things. Just yesterday I added full spectrum lighting (though I have always supplemented). I have no idea if that is what peaked Samson’s interest but who cares, as long as their going at it I'm happy.

Now that she has been inseminated, how long before I can expect to see some eggs?

And while I'm here, I thought I would ask another quick question (or, maybe not so quick). I live in CA and the summers get very hot. We use a swamp cooler to cool our house and the temps still stay pretty high sometimes (like 80 or more in the house at very hot and humid days). I am concerned about needing cooler incubation temps for the eggs I should see soon. They'll be fine for the next 4 months or so but after that I am not sure. My question is this; has anyone ever tried digging a deep pit and just burying their eggs for the long haul? I know it sounds kind of crazy but I am limited with what I can do. Temps at about 2 feet down should be acceptable in the summer months here. I am sure there has to be an easy way that I could check on them every once in a while as well but it will take some thinking. I have also heard that chilling the eggs to about 60 to 65 for the first month or so and then bringing the temps up from there can aid in expediting things a bit. Any truth to that?

Any input is more then welcome.

Thank you,

Brad Alexander

She should be ready to lay in about 3 wks if this is her first clutch. Some go as long as 6 wks. Be sure to provide her with a place to lay her eggs.

Thanks for the information!

Actually, about 8 years ago I had a few panthers and some veileds. I was very unsuccessful at incubating the eggs but I greatly enjoyed keeping the chams. I had the group for about a year or year and a half before I decided I had too many other things going on. I completely regret it now but at the time, getting rid of them seemed to be the best thing for them and me. I have since forgotten all the little things i.e. duration from mating to depositing the eggs.

Thanks again,

Brad Alexander
