Do I need to brumate this male?

lovelyleopards Jan 06, 2004 09:44 PM

My '02 Blizzard male has not eaten since 12/24. He appears completely healthy, he's had good poop, etc. His temps are correct. Is he just putting himself through a natural brumation? Should I go ahead and put him down now? Is 60 an ojay temp to cool at? When should I "wake him up?" All my '03s are feeding great, so I'm assuming it's because he's older and his biological clock is ticking. Thanks for any help.

Is he getting ready to shed? I know its been awhile since he has fed, but you never know. Sixty is a good temp to cool him at. Limits metabolism and keeps them from burning body weight. You may want to try a "mini-brumation" for maybe a month or so to see if that will perk his appetite up. I generally cool my breeders for three months. Usually December thru February, and warm them back up around Valentines Day. However, some males do not feed after brumation because they are too busy "lookin' for love"!

Good Luck!

Hi Kevin,

He hasn't clouded up, that I have noticed. But how hard is it to tell when a pink-eyed snake clouds? I was out of town from the 25th to the 30th, so I suppose it is possible that he clouded then and I wasn't here to notice. I'll give him a few more days, and if he doesn't want to eat by then, I'll put him down for a month or two. Thanks!
