CBB GTP $300, could it be legitimate?

paul kemes Jun 04, 2003 09:20 PM

The ad says:

CBB Full Striped Sorong Green Tree Python $300.00

For that price do you think it is really captive bred and born? What questions should I ask the seller or what else should I be aware of if considering buying this snake? I will be going to a reptile show where the seller will be this Saturday, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Personally I think there is too much work involved in chondros to sell them that cheap......if they are in fact captive bred and born. Ask to see pictures of the adults, incubation method, incubation period, how many meals, sheds, ect. My bet is that it's an import hatchling. Prices for true captive bred chondros aren't going to be that cheap. Ask anybody that does breed them. I kept all of mine from my first clutch because no one would pay what I wanted at the time, and I was only asking $450 ea. for mine. I'm glad I did, as I found out my adults are from Lemon Tree lineage. I would save a little more money and buy from a reputable breeder. It will save you money and lots of headaches in the long run. Good luck.

it could be a CBB gtp. but maybe not bred in the USA. it might be a cbb imported from a farm in indonesia or thailand. i know of farms there selling cbb gtps from both long term parents and cb parents at very cheap prices(around US$40 to 50). they do come with cites papers and all.

At that price, I HIGHLY doubt the animals are true CBB animals. POSSIBLY they are CB farmed from Indonesia, but even that is doubtful. At most they are captive hatched from a gravid animal snagged out of the wild, in my opinion.

Although sometimes you can get lucky with imports, those animals are the exceptions, not the rule. Also, there seems to be a trend of some import chondros doing great and eating well, then suddenly dying after about two years for no apparent reason.

Basically, if it's too cheap to be true, it more than likely is.

US$50 to 60 is very very very big in indonesia... especially for the local rural people who work at the farm.. these animals are bred there. i've been to these farms before. the weather's perfect for breeding.. you don't have to hibernate them. they just do it when it's time. there are also farms that collect gravid wild females, but from what i know, there are a lot of breeding projects in indonesia and thailand.. they're breeding rare tree monitors, retics, chameleons, burmese pythons, mostly asian stuff...

Hey Rich, sounds like you're on the right track. I wish you luck and many babies. All but one of my babies is eating like a horse. I'm still trying to get the last one to eat, but he's being stubborn. My next try is chich down.........hopefully.

I would consider that awefully suspicious...You can get a deal like that if your best friend breeds the snake and he cuts you a deal...but I doubt that you get a deal like that at a reptile show. Now, if you want a good baby, you should look for a couple of things. Ideally it should be CBB AND established!!! Established means that the snake has accepted available food often enough that he will consistently feed and that someone has observed the snake long enough to ensure that (apparently) he is healthy.
I would ask (on top of the routine health check)
-Pictures of the parents &clutch
-Feeding/health records of the baby
Otherwise I would consider WC or "suspiciously equivalent to WC"...
My 02 cents

Jay at Exotic Jungle...Look for his ads in the classifieds. He's got USCBB Aru Types for $350, produced by him.

Any legidimate breeder/dealer should and will have history documents on their livestock. With that said price is determined by the seller for what ever reason. I've seen CBB Chondros for sale for as little as $250.00 and as great as $5000.00! It depends on the animal in question. Not all Chondropython are high end specimens. If you acquire a beautiful one in your opinion and you feel you got a great deal good for you.

Best Regards
Marc.
