Moss and its success rate...

ex_action_figure Jan 07, 2004 01:33 AM

how many of you have moss in your tank? and how long have you been keeping it and do you think it is hard to keep? what types are you keeping?
I have heard alot of horror stories about the success rate being very very low
is this true?
I will have a 36" 2x96W Coralife FRESHWATER Aqualight, 2x 6,700K, powercompact on my 30 gallon and I plan on having the whole floor of the tank covered it moss
what do you think?
whats the best moss to get? I hear its pillow moss-any links where you got yours?
thanks
-Matt

I cant speak from personal experience because I am very new to vivaria and frog keeping, but I have been doing a lot of research and am in the early stages of setting up my first larger tank. I've read in several places that people have good luck with their lighting in the 50000 to 55000K range.

Doh....I just noticed my error..5000-5500K. I got zero happy for a minute.

Color temperature has little, if any, effect on plants. Intensity and spectrum are the factors to consider. Go with the brightest full spectrum lights you can afford and pick a color temp and CRI that is visually pleasing (usually 4500k - 6700k and greater than 80 CRI).

I can speak from experience when I say that I have had success with it. Now I have not covered the whole bottom but we have used it is some tanks up to 1/3 of the tank(55gallons or larger) with good success. Good luck

Best success rate? Java moss. Likes to be on the wet side but grows well terrestrially if the humidity is consistently high.
