Dwarf dumerils

BitisGabonica Jan 07, 2004 06:24 AM

Does anyone have any information on dwarf dumerils boas? We own a pair of dumerils, the male is 3 yrs, the female 5 yrs but much smaller (although she was a fussy feeder for her previous owner, not eating for almost a year). Kyle Barker suggested that maybe the female is a dwarf,. he advised me to come on here and that maybe Stav may perhaps have some info?

Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

I am not sure there is such a thing as a Dwarf Dum. About a year ago i tried to find a pair and the opinion of the breeders i contacted was that this is already a dwarf boa and occasionnally you will get extra small specimens. But those dont necessarily breed true to size. susan

Dumerils boas should not be fed as heavily as Bci (common or Colombian redtail boas), those that are tend to get larger as well as obese. On a proper diet, Dumerils are around 6-7 feet in length with some animals staying smaller. My pair of '99 Dumerils are respectively, a 4' male and a 5' female. They'll both still grow, and I expect each to gain at least another foot in length over the next few years, but they are hardly dwarf dumerils. The general concensus that I've heard from breeders and keepers of dumerils around here is that calling smaller animals 'dwarf dums' is a selling ploy as the offspring of smaller animals don't necessarily turn out as small adults themselves.
