Herby is not doing well...

windsor Jan 07, 2004 06:59 AM

Based on observation, how did the MHD's who died of natural causes behave at the end?? I'm looking any tips on making Herby more comfortable.

I will try to feed her today, but I don't want to stress her out if she really is at the end of her life cycle.

Bummed but thinking this is inevitable...after all we had her for probably a year longer than we should have based on how sick she was when we got her. sigh...

Thanks,
Windy

The only dragons I have lost have been too young, in my opinion, to have died of natural causes. I lost one female to being egg bound. Another died after laying several clutches of fertile eggs that all wound up dead in shell or shortly after, all having terrible deformities. I think she just exhausted herself.

Any others I have lost have been during treatment for ills. In all cases they have become very lethargic. The skin looked dull and flakey and the color was very dark.

I think I would palpate her to see if you can feel any eggs that may not have been passed. If this is the case she could be in trouble from the retained eggs. If not, then she could just be tired. I would give nice warm soaks, pedialyte, and something for nutrition, like baby strained lamb or something. I would certainly give it all you can to try to keep her and if she doesn't make it you will know you did all you could.

You have had her about a year haven't you? Have you ever tested for parasites since the first bout? It is possible that she has contrated parasites from her live food and the stress of having produced eggs could have pushed her over the limit. If you haven't had her checked lately I would also consider having a fecal check done just in case.

I really hope you don't lose her after all you have been through with her.

Good Luck, keep us posted.
