Question about behavior..

nimvix Jan 07, 2004 10:42 AM

My new leo (got her the first of the year) seems to spend practically all her time in hiding. My other leo would come out and bask from time to time, but my new one stays in hiding almost ALL the time. In fact, even at night I haven't seen her come out.

Now, I know she is coming out because she is eating 4 or 5 crickets a day, and pooping once a day (normal stool, not runny or anything).

What I'm curious about is - Is this really normal, and was my other gecko just odd to come out so much? I'm not widely experienced with geckos so I'm not sure just how much variance to expect in their individual behaviors. I imagine this is probably "okay" but, thought I should check.

You know, better safe in advance than sorry you didn't do something sooner type of mentality.

Thanks,
Mike

Ya i'd say thats normal behaviour seeing as you just got it. Even after 5 months with my geckos most of them still hide whenever i'm around. I've only caught Abby out of hiding twice and thats cause i came home after work and turned the lights on in my room. Nala is only now starting to bask outside of her hide and Bronx will only come out after i put in mealworms but even then he waits a while and will hide if i come close to the tank. Dot, Boo and Lily move around their tanks whether i'm around or not and they bask out in the open 90% of the time. Dot just flipped her humid hide upside down and now hides inside under the paper towels but she still comes out alot and will sit in her dish when she wants food.

Even after your new gecko becomes accustomed to the new environment it may still hide moreso than your other gecko. Each one has a different personality so while one feels ok sitting out in the open the other might just prefer to be inside something.

I agree with Red. I've got 5 adult females in a single enclosure and they all have different hiding habits. A couple hide all the time. Never see them unless I take them out. One hides along the side of the tank under cover all the time. The last two are out moving from hide to hide all day/night long. Never know where I'll find them.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. From what I've heard, personalities differ widely.
