lifetime of mercury vapor bulbs

mismodliz Jan 07, 2004 10:52 AM

What is everyone's opinion (based on experience, research, etc.) on the lifetime of mercury vapor bulbs?

When I purchased my dragon, the breeder suggested one of these (which I stupidly bought at his pet store for $80) saying that they have an 18 months warranty on them, and that although they may last longer, to make sure I replace it after 18 months b/c the benefits significantly drop after that time period.

However, I've read posts here where people say to replace bulbs at 6 months. Is that in reference to the MVB?

p.s. buying them from reptiledirect.com now

Thanks for your input.

I personally just went through an overhaul here switching out all my Powersuns for dual fixture fluorescent with halogen spot lights in all my melamine cages. Yes, Powersun bulbs do have warrantees where if the bulb blows before 12 months they will replace it if you ship it back with your receipt. I personally can't remember the last MVB I had bought last over six months, and most blew after 2-3. I personally just had enough with them blowing, and switched back to dual fixtures that hold two Repti-Sun 5.0's. Not sure if my electricity was the problem, surges, or what, but I treated these MVB bulbs like diamonds not touching the bulbs with bare hands, and once putting them in not moving them at all like recommended by Zoomed, and still they blew prematurely. In all these cages I had to use 100 watt Powersuns cause the 160 was too hot, and after seeing the results of some tests on the 100 watt flood bulbs I was not happy. Seemed they died in UVB output big time after the first 2 months. I feel comfortable with the dual fluorescent as even before the Powersun MVB I did fine raising up reptiles without MBD or growth issues. I use to use 1 fluorescent Repti-sun 5.0 and supplemented with rep-cal with d3 before the Powersun came out. The 100 watt MVB only covered the basking spot in my cages, and now with the long tubes and the larger basking area, they will receive UVB throughout most of the cage, and because I use mostly melamine enclosures, and not glass I was able to attach them half way down the back wall and within 8 inches of the basking logs that are more then 2/3rds the length of my cages just like the fixtures. I doubt they will get less UVB exposure especially with the dual bulbs at the close distance. The fluorescents are recommended to be switched out every 6-7 months. The Powersun supposedly last 12 months putting out high UVB, but it seemed with the 100 watt flood bulbs after 2-3 months it equaled the power of a strip light at proper close distances. The 160 gives out more after 2 months, but they start with more as well. Not sure if I was able to use the 160's without the blow outs every 3 months I would have switched, but I'm happy with the dual strips now and my cages are nice, and the brightest they ever been with much whiter light then I had with the Powersun and a cheap fluorescent going. Some places you can go to see some test results are at www.beautifuldragons.com and at the yahoo group copy & paste http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners

Either way if you can get the 160 watt MVB to last without blowing, and don't have many cages to worry if they blow and take a while to get replacement by Zoomed, or use a dual fluorescent fixture with repti-sun 5.0's and switch them out the reccomended 6-7 months you will be providing nice UVB for your dragons

my first MVB lasted 18 months, and i replaced it. it still works, and i kept it as a backup just in case i got in a bind if something were to happen with the newer one. the new one is a couple of months old and doing fine.

i just wanted to make sure i wasn't depriving him by using the MVB for so long. i have a one 100 wt powersun MVB placed directly on his screen top, and he's a healthy guy -- so i think i'm ok so far!

thanks for the great info.

Where you using a 10 inch dome fixture on your powersun bulbs?

Mattman Jan 07, 2004 04:46 PM

Some of them where in my enclosures which is just a ceramic fixture with no dome at all. So there was no trapped heat or sitting on screens at all. Once they were in, that was it they stayed untouched till blown. On a few of my glass tanks yes, 10inch domes were used to keep them off the screens. Just seemed in a little over a year of using them I had bad luck with them blowing on me early. Very few lasted over six months, and it seemed every month or two I was shipping out for replacements. Not sure if it is my electricity or not, but quite a few people I know had the same problems with early blow outs. I do have 2 rows with four cages stacked to the ceiling lit up plus 3 more glass cages on stands, and a rack in a few months with 9 more bins being lit, But this is not something new, even in my last residence with less cages they all seemed to blow prematurely, and my cages where in a few different rooms spread out through the house and running on different circuits. To be honest I'm quite happy to be done with them after the feeling I would get when they blew on me after not even 2 months. I'd rather put in two tubes and be done with it knowing my dragons are getting nice steady UVB with no worries of blown bulbs, or shipping out for warrantees.
