C.molossus info needed !

mixcoatl Jan 07, 2004 03:20 PM

Hi guys,
I've browsed the forums and did not find much infos on blacktails.
Was wondering if you could tell me the 'presumed' locality of the animals on this picture.A friend of mine is attempting to breed this pair and is seeking advice concerning cooling strategies, temps etc.Any help would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks
Geoff

Your friend has two different localities represented here. The male is a Tx specimen, and the female appears to be from se Az.
If I had to guess on the female, I would say the Chiricahuas would be a pretty good guess, but I'd be interested in Rich G's opinion.
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Both specimens are around 3 1/2 feet.Male is 390g, female between 500 and 600g.
The male feeds on 2 live adult mice every other week, and the female takes one 70g fuzzy rat every week.Does this seem a good feeding shedule ?
As regards breeding, does anyone know the ideal temperature and length of the resting period ?

The feeding regimen is a sufficient maintenance diet, but I would increase the size/weight of the rats for the female if you planned on breeding her.
Brumation temps ideally would be in the 50-55 degree F range for a period of 3-4 months.
They may copulate in the spring several weeks after coming out of brumation and being warmed up, but you will probably have more success with breeding molossus in the late summer or early fall.
Good luck!

the male is most definately a Texas snake. The female does indeed look to be from S.E. Arizona, but there is a remote possibility she is from Texas> I have seen two blacktails from the Christmas Mts. in Brewster Co. Texas that looked just like Chiricahua snakes.

Here is a link to some breeding info from the KS forum archives.

I accidentally posted the responses in upside down order but you'll figure it out.
Blacktail breeders?

Thank you very much guys for all the informations,
many interrogations were answered in the archives you mentionned.
Hope that this awesome species will be propagated much more often both in the US and Europe.
What is the price for CB molossus on the US market ?

You're welcome, hope it helps.
I have no idea what molossus prices are. Both Rich G and I live in Az where it is illegal to buy/sell native reptiles, even cbb offspring. I never bred any snake for the money anyway, always for the fun of it!
Cheers, Bill

all This firsthand Molossus info is greatly appreciated you guys,
There is a definite lack of books or anything regarding breeding this species.

I just picked up a nice adult CB female C.M.Molossus to go with my male(Thanks to greg at Extreme Exotics)and hope to breed them as soon as possible.
Thanks Again
Ryan
