What to do with Ignatious......???

Heather Jan 07, 2004 03:55 PM

Last.... March?... or so I went into a Pet Store... And found that someone had dumped off a "young" iguana. He was just under 2 feet at the time. He was in with all the baby Igs and Water Dragons. He had MBD in His toes and Lip and was almost black He was so cold (It was freezing in that store) and looked very depressed. They said They had to find a home for him, the couldn't sell him. So I took him to Rescue him and adopt Him Out after He was better and tamed some. Well, Things were going ok. Got Him home, Warmed Him up. He ate right away. But He was .... grumpy..... Expected that since He didn't know my from anyone... Anyhow, Started working with him to tame him. Turns out He was in Breeding Season. He's an EXTREMELY stunted adult. He's just over 2' now. We call Him Obnoxious Ignatious. We've had Him here since then. He was doing great for a while. I Even felt brave and confident enough in him to hold him with bare hands at one time. But He took a turn for the nasties again. I work with Him DAILY for at LEAST 2 hours every day. From Just sitting talking to him to petting him to actually taking him out and holding him. He's just a Nasty SOB! He's bitten me to the point that My Mom wanted me to get stitches more times then I care to remember. He whips and claws and bites and hisses if you even look at him! I know some igs are like that but with all the work you'd think He'd be a little better at least! He was Doing Great! But Now He's gone back to Being ugly! I don't know what to do! I never intended on having TWO Igs, Just wanted the one, Smirnoff, My Sweet heart. But I'm starting to think that He'll never tame and never be adoptable... Certainly don't want to dump another one on a Rescuer.... They Have Enough problems with the loads they have. I also can't give up the cage I'm using for him even if I could give him to a rescuer... I'm honestly at a loss. I feel like an idiot for ever taking him. I wanted to help but now I feel I'm the one in need of help. He's not too much for me to take care of. He's doing great in the cage He's in and eatting great. Like I said, He's even grown. But I don't know what to do about his personality... Did I just become His forever home? Ugh.... I feel like a moron.....

I am having that same issue with my ig. Well, sort of... my male has been in his breeding season since Sept & he is not getting any better yet, it seems like he is getting worse. He bit my on my stomach a few months ago & I went to the urgent care & they couldn't stitch me up b/c it was sliced too badly so I got 5 butterfly stitches. I still have a nasty scar.

I adopted this guy last March with no intentions of ever giving him up but he's just been so BAD lately that I don't know what to do. Plus, he's a free-roamer so he usually stalks me, trying to jump at my face & hands. When he's sitting on the couch, he won't let anyone near it, he goes whipping & charging & trying to bite. If I even turn to look at him, he goes nuts with his head bobbing.

I am hoping this will pass soon & he will go back to his normal, sweet self, but it's already been 3 months, not sure how long this lasts? I was looking at the CORR website & it was sad to see so many unwanted igs, especially males. I don't want my Porfi to end up one of them...

Well, this time of year can still be breeding season for some igs. Last year, Dexter was in breeding season (and was extremely aggressive) from October to the middle of February. He was very amiable until his season last year, then he turned into an absolute monster! He tried to bite me all the time. I got to the point where I thought he was never going to return to his normal, lovable self. Fortunately, he eventually did, and I learned a lot about reading his behaviors.

This year, he has not been nearly as bad. The past couple of weeks have been the only time he's been nasty, and he has been having a couple bad days, then a good day, then back to nasty... But, I now know what to watch for when he starts to get grumpy, so I can avoid getting bitten, and leave him alone since this is what he really wants during his nasty bouts...

Good luck!
