Check out the incubator that i made

SimonSez Jan 07, 2004 04:05 PM

I took an old upright freezer and made an incubator out of it. I wanted to be different so i installed a window. If you want to see a better picture of the window go to the photo gallery and search with my user name and get a better look. Thanks for any opinions

I thought the window would look nice too. How are you heating yours?? how are you raising the humidity?? I guess maybe you could just tell me how you setup the inside of your fridge. Thanks Brian Dallek

I stripped the compressor and the coils out. Then removed anything else that i deemed unnecessary. I put 2 4 foot strips of 11 inch flexwatt tape down the back. for humidity i keep a 2 1/2 gallon tank sitting in the bottom. I didn't cut out the whole door because i wanted to be able to frame it in nicely and the shelves in the door would not let that happen. The window is 12x19 and gives me a view of the top 2 shelves. I use the top shelf for leopard geckos, the 2 nd shelf for bearded dragons and the bottom shelf for leopard tortoises.

That is awesome, I really like it, can yuou elaborate more on how you sealed the glass/plexiglass to the door. Just want to make sure I leave no leaks, when I build one.

Thanks again.

Joel

I used aluminum pop rivets and silicone to install the frame and the glass. The 2 1/2 gallon tank is just an old fish tank (2 1/2 gallon size) that fir perfectly in the bottom. You were right with more heat tape they don't work as hard and faster to heat, less expensive on the light bill.

Wow so you have 8ft of heat tape in there. I have 3ft and it is holding 90deg fairly easy. I suppose the more tape the less work they will have to do and less chance of temp fluxuations or failure, makes sense. Anyway I was wondering when you say a 2 1/2 tank at the bottom is this like a rubbermaid with the top off that is full of water? Is if open on the top or semi closed? I guess could you just explain it a bit more or even a pic would be killer, but I don't expect that. I haven't used mine yet, but it sounds like yours is working great, which I am glad to hear. Thanks, Brian Dallek

I think he uses a 2.5 gallon aquarium. I hardly ever see them anymore. Pretty small!
Although a rubbermaid would work as well.

Is there a drastic difference in temperature from bottom of freezer to top?

That would be my main concern in an upright configuration like that.

I do not have first hand experience but if worried about the temperature difference you could install a small fan. A good sourse is an old computer as the have small fans or even a new replacement computer fan part would not be very expensive to buy.
A lotof people have an old computer around somewhere, so ask your friend if you do not. Another source is a computer repair shop.

If worried about direct air you could place it under bottom shelf
blowing air down so air would bounce off pan of water picking up moisture and not drying out things too much.
