Gecko Identification - Some type of Phelsuma?

uttzey Jan 07, 2004 04:38 PM

Haven't been able to obtain a digital picture of my new little guys, but I purchases them from a friend of a friend who is unable to give me an exact species name.

They're both approximately 2.5-3.5 inches in length. They're similar in appearance to a Gold Dust Day Gecko, but lack any large orange spots. They've got a little bit of the blue shading around the eyes and an orange strip between two blue on their backs. The "male", assuming the male is the one with the more attractive features, has a small slightly pronounced ridge along his back. The less flashy, smaller gecko has a very small ridge and is more modestly colored.

Any ideas on what species these two little one's might be?

Would appreciate any thoughts...

I am unaware of any Phelsuma with a ridge down the back. Mainly Phelsuma from the Comoros Islands are sexually dimorphic, and these usually are high priced. Go to www.gekkota.com and look at all of the Phelsuma pics. It may be Phelsuma l. angularis (a subspecies of the nominate P. l. laticauda), in which females are more dully colored than males (mainly a yellow and orange, compaired to rainbow colored males), but the ridge on the back, throws everything off.

I guess ridge might be a little extreme, but it'd definitely a raised area that is more noticeable than the rest of "his" back.

On another note. Got the "male" into some brighter light last night and found that he does in fact have two, maybe three, small orange spots like the gecko I mentioned in the previous message, but I'd still maintain a slight ridge, not necessarily a crest.

The ridge may very well be his spine showing. This simply shows poor care as no phelsuma should have such a ridge. Phelsuma will change colors depending on a variety of things but a happy and warm one, female or male, will be bright green with its spots clearly showing (if it has any).
