Injured/Infection on Lizard?

Wormo3188 Jan 07, 2004 05:30 PM

I was looking at my collared yesterday and he seemed pretty normal, except that there was like a lump of some sort by his "nose", like right next to the opening, and then today I went down and looked and it had gotten worse, it was all white and looked like an open sore of some sort, it goes right around the hole for his nose, only on one side. He is still eating so I dont think it could be that bad, but has been a little lathargig in the past two days, any idea what this could be? How can I treat it and prevent it from happening again?
Thanks

It could be, does it appear to be white and looks somewhat crusty and puffy around the nostril opening?
If so this can sometimes be salt deposits, excess salt gets expelled out through the nostrils, and sometimes even appears to clog the holes.

Or form a kind of crusty ring around the outside. This usually corrects itself. You can use a Q-tip (wet with warm water) and just dab it.

Or if it is an actual open red sore, he could be jumping and hiting his nose on glass, called a nose rub. They can be raw looking and can bleed.
If it is this, use neosporin ointment or something simular, antibiotic ointment on it until healed.

As far as the eating, its that time when some slow their appetites, if your temperatures are right and hes not losing weight(noticabe) than I would not worry about that. Just keep an eye on him.

Hope his nose gets better, post a pic, when ya get a chance we love pics !!!

Hey, My lizard is the same one as micro's, we are brothers and I got it for him a few weeks ago.

Now that I think about it, it does look a lot like salt deposits, it also seems to have cleared up a bit from earlier. What temperatures should I have the tank around right now? One side is 110 F and the other side is 90 F, should I lower it because its the winter? or leave it where it is?

He does jump around the tank and leap into the walls, but it doesnt seem like he has done anything to hurt himself yet.

Temps 100- 105 some have it a bit higher at 110 so your temps seem to be fine.

Even though it is winter if you are not brumating him for breeding, or he has not tried to just sleep himself , than your temps are fine.

The salt deposits are really common, thats what it sounds like to me, it looks like a crusty ring or bumpy white mess around the outer edge of nostril opening like I said. And it goes away !

Nice talking to you guys, and nice picture that was posted a couple days ago. Hes pretty !

Glad his nose looks better.

What would I be looking for if he wants to "sleep"? I dug himself a hole underneath one of the rocks and goes under there at night or sometimes just sleeps under some of the caves in the tank. I was assume this is normal, but if he lets say did want the temps lower so he could sleep/brumate (not to sure about this) then what would I be looking for so that I can make him as comforatable as possible.

If he does not want to come out and bask under his light or eat, just wants to sleep under a rock, or wherever he sleeps.

Some will not come out till much later in the day, some will not eat much. You would notice a difference in his habits !

If I were you and your brother, I would look into and learn about BRUMATION for next year.

Theres a few good sites, I can give you if you want them, later.

Yeah, I'll keep that in mind. I havent really noticed too much of a patern yet so I'll let him be for this year and then deal with brumation next year.

eve Jan 08, 2004 10:11 PM

Yep, thats what I would do. Next year.

Most people brumate them because it is nessesary for breeding. But it is also good to give them a rest once in awhile. He may let you know next year, when hes ready, like I say some just go off and go to sleep themselves.

Others have to be encouraged. You guys should post some more pics, we all like to see them. :P
