Is it just me or....

carl3 Jan 07, 2004 05:59 PM

Are there a lot more threads posted by people who know NOTHING about snakes! I realize that it's at least noble that they're posting and asking questions but what's the deal with the 'What type of corn snake is this?' posts or the 'my 11 corns in one container are getting sick' posts. Oh well, I just had to vent b/c I enjoy the pics people post on this forum and there are just less and less of them lately, or they're diluted by more and more stupid posts.

Maybe its just me being cranky OR maybe its a seasonal thing with this time of year, ...less quality 'left over' animals are more commonly pawned off to unsuspecting new, first time snake owners? Who knows!

but I have learned alot from reading what you guys have to say. Most of my questions were answered by just reading everyones posts. I don't answer alot of ?'s because you guys know more than I do, and I don't want to steer anyone wrong. If I feel that I can answer, then I do. I like to see all of you guys' beautiful snakes, but sometimes I skip through alot of posts, because they are all the same thing. I think alot of people just get on here and post "off the wall" things, to get a rise out of everyone on here. Most of the time I try to ignore that and move on to something that is interesting and beneficial to me.
Thanks to all of you that have helped me and have been "nice" and not rude to me. You all have taught me alot in this short time.

many of the senior members and regulars have received the boot for whatever reasons... I know I haven't seen posts from a bunch of people in a while around here but have seen them elsewhere.

Eventually all that will be left are newbies helping newbies, not good for business but the price to pay for an itchy trigger finger for sure...

You're right, many people that were commonly posting on this forum have been either censored, blocked or deleted.

I've been gone several months & the only familiar name I've seen is Draybar. I know I didn't come back after the new people took over in April or May - no particular reason, just more kids & fewer knowledgeable adults I think.

>>I've been gone several months & the only familiar name I've seen is Draybar. I know I didn't come back after the new people took over in April or May - no particular reason, just more kids & fewer knowledgeable adults I think.

I just jump back and forth to both. I have met some "friends" on both forums and always enjoy seeing everyone's pictures.
I also try to help out when I can but I do have a tendency to be a little too opinionated at times. Oh well, I figure with the quick finger on the "boot button" over here that I must not have been too bad because I'm still here...lol
But it is nice to see familiar names every once in a while.

It's just that you have evolved to such a wise and magnificant state of being that you can no longer relate to the plight of the common mortal. I'm sure it's difficult and confusing for you, and...well...actually you would probably be better off not troubling yourself with such petty matters. Just look at the pretty pictures, Carl.

Well if it helps, I am new to this forum and I am not a newbie and I always answer good questions when I see them. It is a good thing to see new people interested in snakes. I really enjoy this forum and I hope you guys stay, because if you leave then it will be even more newbie and less experienced around here. Be patient and answer people's questions. It is actually fun to help people out when possible. And always always keep up the good humor! I love it!

People are just plain stupid these days in regards to everything. Seems like humanity is in a pitifull process of devolution and each succeeding generation get's a little more dim-witted.
This latest crop of kids is like a mass brood of congenital throwbacks.

Jcherry Jan 08, 2004 02:17 AM

You guys seem to be in a real sour mood, cheer up folks the world is not flat and there are new snakes each year being produced by lots of new and old folks that care about this hobby.

And as far as it all being "newbies" here, I myself have over 35 years in the hobby, Soderburg as many if not more than that, Kathy Love has been in the hobby forever even though she looks to be only 25 years old or so and I have seen numerous other folks here that have 20 years plus experience.

Are the questions ask sometimes repetitive, yes they are. But I know I ask some pretty dumg ones looking back over the years. So I guess that is just how it goes. And ever once in a while a "newbie" as you guys have referred to them asks a question or takes a point of view that is new and gets us all to thinking. I for one sure don't have all the answers.

So As for myself I am just going to lean back and enjoy the flow of the hobby and try to learn as much as I can from everyone. And along the way try to hand out what little knowledge I have to the new group as often as I can.

"The Glass Is Half Full" if you know what I mean!

I have seen some young people with a lot more practical knowledge then some of the so-called experts and long time keepers. They are much more flexible and willing to learn.
Granted there are some that are probably just too immature to keep herps but then so are some of the older people that have been here. Including me...lol
I have absolutely no problem with newbies and newbie questions, after all this is what the forum is for. A place for people to come learn about the hobby. We have all had questions that a more in depth explanation, then books may provide, is needed.
But, there are times when it gets exasperating when it is obvious that, one, they have been just too lazy to even try to learn and, two, even after being led in the right direction they just don't listen. But once again this is more an individual thing and not an age thing.
I hope that made sense, I feel like I'm rambling incoherently....lol

Sounds like you're surrounded by the wrong people. Or maybe you need to GET BACK ON YOUR MEDS! And if your kids are really that stupid, I suggest that you stop breeding immediately. Mine, on the other hand, are brilliant! Like the man said...Sounds like your glass is MORE than half empty. Sorry about your luck. D

All you people need to lighten up!! I consider my self a 'newbie', as you all are calling new comers. I got my first snake, a corn, a year ago and am still learning. I now have 2 corns, a milk and a jungle carpet python. I have yet to know all there is to know about snakes. If we are asking 'dumb' questions then IGNORE them. They are not dumb to us. I love to read these forums not only for advise but also to see what other snake people have and have experienced in the past.
And by the way, I'm not some dumb kid either...I'm a 40 year old adult whose still learning.

IcedGoddess Jan 08, 2004 10:39 AM

I'm positive you weren't the "type" of newbie this post was aimed at. I myself have only had snakes for a year and a half, and though I'm pretty comfortable with my hepetoculture here, I still ask a lot of questions on breeding and geneology, some I've even asked more than once I'm sure.

The problem is the lastest flood of not only new, but new and under-informed teens. Like the one who claimed someone elses baby was in no way an Okeetee and he knew this because he had 11 snakes of different morphs, then in the post above it, he said he had all 11 in the same cage!
I know "newbies" have questions, I asked, and probably will continue to ask my share. But this type of incompetence and complete lack of common sense is pretty hard to "relate" with. Even when I bought my first hampster at 12 years old, I read a little info on keeping them. That's all it would have taken for that kid to know that 11 snakes (that are not siblings) should not be kept together for many reasons.

It's hard sometimes to deal with nasty responses to our posts on here, and I try to stay somewhat out of it all. But some things are just too hard to take. Like these poor 11 snakes who now seem to be catching each others illnesses and under unreasonable stress besides.

I should clear up that my original post was in NO WAY directed to the average beginner. IcedGoddess hit the nail on the head as my initial post was generalizing about a VERY SMALL percentage of certain beginner's posts, some of which I could swear were thankfully deleted. There is no need to go beat it to death since I wrote the initial post on impulse and did not give it much thought nor expected such response.

EVERYONE seems to agree that ALL beginner questions are welcomed and should never be meant to feel STUPID b/c there are no stupid questions (maybe sometimes stupid people, but not ?s).

IMHO Come on guys lets look at this in perspective. Without the newbies the hobby or business (whichever it is to you) would not survive. You do not have to answer/read posts you do not want.

If we do not help the new person their snake will probably die and then they will go an get something else in a industry that will help them get their knowledge up to speed.

On the other hand, no one should be buying a snake without doing their homework first. I am personally tired, like some of you said, of answering the "what type of corn" (especially when it is a normal) or the "help corn will not eat". BUY A BOOK AND READ.

Most of your questions will be answered in a basic care book or website. If us with more experience would not ridicule (sp) and give the newbie an answer or even better tell them where they can find the info for themselves the industry as a whole can be improved.

IMHO

Tom

Those newbies that read/researched, stated what they learned, what they've done, etc and STILL have problems.

If you have the means to buy and care for a snake you have the means to buy Kathy's book. No excuses, she ships.

I think if the noobs include what they've read/researched FIRST in their post and why/what the problem is we all will be less annoyed...
