Regarding East Coast Shows

aplaxco Jan 07, 2004 07:38 PM

Hey, the post below (very entertaining) got me thinking. We are trying to figure out this year's travel budget and I was thinking about planning a vacation around attending a herp show. West Coast shows are fun but not like some of the big shows in FL. I know we are thinking of hitting the IRBA show in Pomona, CA (which I hear is disappointing these days) but does anybody want to recomend a good show in FL? Preferrably one with lots of corns and interesting people to meet.

Thanks

All the big names are at the Daytona show.If it wasnt for the fact my family would want to go to disneyland also, cringes,I would be at every show...Paul

I'm going to try my hardest to go next year but chances are slim. I was thinking though, even if I did go, how would I get anything I bought home? Undoubtidly I would HAVE to buy SOMETHING, it's just too many reptiles in one place and I'm too obsessed to be so immersed in reptile paradise and walk away empty-handed...

When I am trying to decide on which shows I am going to go to as a spectator and not a vendor we consider the following things:

1. Do we want numbers of herps as a mainstay or will we satisfied with fewer numbers.

2. Do we have specific animals from a specific breeder that will be at a certain show?

3.. Do we want to attend seminars on specific topics while at the show?

4. Who else is going to be at a specific show as far as friends and breeders from other places we do not get to see except at a specific show.

When it comes to numbers without a doubt the Daytona show has it hands down. Every new morph and type of animal you can imagine and/or suppliers are there in most years. They even had a separate venomous show this last year and Wayne is planning on doing it again this coming year. Additionally I get to see a lot of old time friends from all over the country there.

When it comes to interesting seminars and speakers the ETHS show in Houston is hard to beat, but they average only about 200 vendors per show.

A really good quality show is the Kansas City show and a lot of good breeders attend it every year, we always end up buying more than we should there.

Anyway those are our thoughts on the show scene, but there are a lot of other good ones we have not been able to go to especially in the northern portion of the country.

Hi John, are there many corns at the kansas show? Will you have a booth there?Just curious only a 10 hour drive from here.I read there web site.Does Ks have places to get venomous?Always wanted to smuggle a copperhead into illinios...thank you..Paul.

Paul,

We are hoping to go as spectators and yes there are a ton of corns there most of the times I have gone. No venomous though. Any of the shows I mentioned are great to attend and there are others that deserve consideration also. From a purely educxational standpoint I love the ETHS show as the speakers are normally pretty durn good.

Have a great day,

Cool...that's totally the show I was thinking of going to. The breeder we got our boa from went last year and had a blast. Unfortunately, with kids, that trip may have to wait until next year when we can also afford D-land. They would never let me live it down if we went all the way to FL and didn't go. Houston may be an option for this year though.
