My baby RES HIBERNATING?? Help!

hepkitten55 Jan 07, 2004 08:17 PM

Hello...
I recently purchased 2 baby red ear sliders... and yes they are the teeny tiny ones, that are illeagl to commercially sell ... I didnt know this when I bought them, However, They are doing good, Eating well and everything, But recently in the last few weeks, they have been hiding in this lil cave i put in their tan, and they wont come out for days, I have to keep taking the cave out so they can eat, otherwise they will go without eating.
Im worried about these lil guys, since no vet will see them since they are small.
Will anyone offer me some advice?
They are kept in a 10 gallon aquarium, with half rocks, and half land to bask in... they have a daytime UV lamp and a Nightime lamp i keep on, and the thermometer says the temp is usually at about 75-85 degrees all the time.....
what causes them to hibernate and should I just continue taking the cave they have out of the tank and wake them up to feed?
Thanks!
Leslie-

I would take out the cave for now and see if their feeding behavior returns to normal.

Assuming that there is water in the tank, I would guess that your turtles are trying to get out of the light. The water should be at about a constant 75F (although opinions vary on this). Do they have any other shade in the tank? What kind of basking light do you use?
