New Black Troat Monitor...more

lucy Feb 09, 2003 09:51 AM

Hi, I just purchased this monitor for my first monitor. Don't worry, I've been researching them for a while now, well at least trying, but I haven't been able to find any good care sheets on them. Does anyone know of any? I've been scanning through old reptiles books of mine but want to look at a good care sheet just to check over everything one last time. Also, would a 7ft/4ft/3ft cage be okay for him? He's only 2ft now. I can't wait for him to arrive, I've read so many good things about the ionides monitors. What do you guys think of him? I got him from Upstate Exotics but I know I should have gone to proexotics for one. lol. Anyway, he's real tame, the guy at upstate says he's real sweet and calm. He's also cb but they didn't know how old he is. How old do you think he is? Oh, and the other question is, and I know it's a stupid one but, what sort of diet should I feed him? I've read everything else there is know know about these monitor but could only find that they like rodents. I know thats not all I should feed him. Well, anyway, sorry for the long post, just want to have everything perfect and know everything I can before he srrives. Thanks!

For a good care sheet go to Pro Exotics website (proexotics.com) and look up their Black Throats. From there you can link to their care sheet, which is very informative. Good luck wiht your new Black Throat. Make sure your cage is secure, these guys, as with most monitors, will check it out thoroughly for you. Also make sure that the monitor is protected from burns by the lighting/heating. I saw this guy in the classified and he looks really nice. ~Gene

CB means captive bred, which CB blackthroats were available from Tarpit reptiles in 2001, and CB Robert Faust Crosses were available from ProExotics and from Faust himself, the rest are false advertising unless they can prove it.
Try to have the cage set up and the temps correct before he arrives, ie. correct basking temps, adequete basking area, some substrate, hide spots, fresh water enough to soak, temperature gradient that allows them to make their own choices, and mice etc to feed. BT monitors are great as far as Im concerned, Ive had several over years. They get big so consider down the road when they need a room almost.
If you did your research you would have easily found a care sheet on Proexotics (the best one Ive found yet for them). It s a good place to start but you have to learn from there by asking questions, and observing the monitor.

it talks to much about pricing and availablity and whatnot. I'm looking for a care sheet that focus's more on husbandry. Also, I need some help thinking of a name. What are some good monitor names? Here's another pic of him. Thanks in advance!
