Gecko Feeding

JCAW13 Jun 04, 2003 10:58 PM

I have 2 fairly young Geckos (1 is 3 months, the other 1 and a half). I've noticed lately that the youngest one won't eat every day. Is it common for a leo to eat a lot of crickets one day and then not have any interest in eating the next day? My 3 month old eats every day and is actually quite the porker, but the other one has days where it seems like he doesn't have any interest in eating the crickets at all. Occasionally I can get him to take a meal worm or 2, but usually he won't even touch those....I worry, but the next day he'll pound down 7 or 8 crickets without a second glance.

anybody have any ideas??

First off, do you have these animals housed together? If so the larger one is intimidating the smaller and not letting him eat. The reason for the 6-7 crickets every other day or so is because he gets so hungry that he just goes for them regardless. You really should seperate them if they are together, once you do you should notice that the smaller one will eat every day and be less stressed.
If you have them seperated already it may just be a case of a picky eater, as long as he is eating though he should be just fine.

they are housed together in a 30 gal long tank with plenty of hides. I really don't think that the larger one is intimidating the smaller one because i feed them on opposite ends of the tank. The large one usually eats anything he finds on his side and then goes back into his hide. The small one just sits there while crickets crawl all over.

i tried feeding them seperately this evening by moving the small one into a smaller cage with food but that didn't seem to help.....still wouldn't eat

Geckos are like that. Sometimes my geckos will go for a few days without eating, and then as soon as I begin to get real worried, they start eating again. When you notice that your gecko hasn't eaten, make a note of it. That way, if the gecko continues to fast and you end up going to the vet you can tell him/her exactly how long it has been since the gecko has eaten. I wouldn't panic until your gecko goes for a week without eating. If it doesn't show interest in food by then, I would call a vet.
