Pacman lighting question (not the usual lighting question) and some feeding question

holy Jan 07, 2004 10:59 PM

During day time, my 2.5" albino pacman (Mandella-Banana) gets sunlight and during the evening, I light a 5 or 7 watt (green opaque painted)incandescent bulb on top of her terarium. Now my question is, is that bad? should I stop lighting up her terarium during the night and let her be in the dark? I really love it when I light her terrarium. It's just the most amazing thing.

And about her eating habits, on her first day, she ate 4 guppies; Second day, a dozen crickets; and after that, I just feed her 2-3 full grown crickets a day because I don't like her growing fast or becomming obesse. Is it okay to let her eat as many she wants? Also, since this is my first time having a frog, I feed her using smooth thongs. Is that okay? I don't want her getting used to being fed because I'll gonna have to go to work soon.

-Thanks in Advance

With ceratophrys they are either skinny(which is bad) or obese!!! They first got sold to me as a stomach on legs. My experience is that they will eat when it is appropriate and refuse when they are satisfied. Good varied diet your frog is getting, nice one!
As for the lights, other posts have said that bright light aint so good and I agree. Also a photoperiod is good for all animals. If I remember rightly there is a reccommended photo period in the DeVosjoli book. (Mine get 12-12 and seem to do OK)
Good luck

About the lighting, so you're saying for me to stop lighting her terrarium during night time?

holy Jan 08, 2004 06:46 AM

About the lights, she's doing really great and I know that bright lights are a not good for them but mine is not a bright light. It's a 5-7 watt green opaque incandescent light bulb. So, is it good or what?

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, thats the kind of thing. My bulb is red so god knows what the neighbours think! As for the photo period, it is a good idea to make it dark at night as all animals, including us can benefit from this. It can also be a mating trigger to manipulate the photo period ratio in many herps although these guys can mate without doing this. However, it is still a good thing. If you do switch off the lights be sure that the night time low temp is still within acceptable boundaries. I cannot reccommend the Horned Frog book by Phillipe DeVosjoli enough. It has all of the answers to all of our questions and it will cost about eight pounds (Are you dollars? I think it is about 12 Dollars) Enjoy!

So you're saying that I should stop lighting up the bulb? If it doesn't harm her that much, can I please light it? I really want to light it up! Please answer me directly to the point.
Anyway, thank you kind sir for answering my questions.

I used to have red lights but I immediately changed it because my room looked like something you see in a horror film with the lights on so it's really scarry.

Can I light it?

If you are referring to lighting at night, I would rec. keeping it off at night. All animals need a normal photo period. If the light stays on it causes stress and can shorten the overall lifespan of your pet. The ill effects may not be obvious to you just looking at her, but long term it is very hard on them. I rec a 14 on and 10 off. I use this year round, but I do not breed. If you want to breed you will need to adjust their photo periods to mimic the natural lighting stimuli for that species.

ill see if i can help you the best i can. pacman frogs(liek many frogs) are nocturnal. they are out during the night, they hunt at night and they soak at night(not to say they wont do any of this during the day, because you have his light on all the time, he has no choice but to do hese things with the light on) if you do not allow the frog to do his normal routine(nocturnal routine) the frog is more then likely very stressed out,and reptiles can die from stress alone. I know you like the incandescence of the light, but it really honestly is better for the frogs wellbeing. if hes stressed out,his immune system is weakened and it will make him more susceptible to diseases and illnesses. Albino frogs imparticular are very fragile when it comes to light. obviously they dont have the dark pigments to protect their insides and their eyes from the damaging effects of the lights. it really can hurt them.another thing is, dont worry about the natural sunlight during the day unless the frog is completely outside(which he shouldnt be,its too cold if your ein the US) when sunlight goes through glass all of its helpful rays are cut down by the glass. so its basically useless. so use the cool light you like during the day. what i do for my frogs is a 12-12hr cycle.i leave the light on for 12 hours(usually from 9 am to 9 pm) and off for the other 12 hours. i think this is a good system, and its worked for me. incase your wondering,im not spouting this stuff without any experience,i have a 4 inch albino pacman myself, and hes as happy as can be and croaks alot,so thats a good sign hes pretty happy! if you have anymore qestions feel free to ask! I hope this works out for you!

Thank You. That's been VERY helpful and very clear. I didn't realize how much damage it can cause to my Pacman.
Hmmm... your pacman is a male? Good thing mine doesn't croak. She's really silent and that's what i like about her.
Thanks again people!

aww no,it isnt so bad,its cute actually! i remember the first time i heard him(someone gave him to me at his now-size. he was living in a 2.5 gallon critter keeper on dirt only, poor guy!he didnt have room to move, hes too big!)and i set him up in a 10 gallon with 4 inches of bed a beast, anda water dish and plants and some fresh buggies, and he was happy as can be and was croaking that night. i originally thought he was a female because of his size(females tedn to be larger) but i saw his throat puffed up and heard him. at first it hought someone was hammering outside,i couldnt figure out what the noise was. its cute

Awww..... poor guy I bought mine in a petshop and she was in a terrible set-up. I don't even think that they feed her because she was really thin. When I asked them about what they feed her, they said, "um... um... gold fish". OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOLD FISH! And I saw their feeder goldfish, it was big!!! It was about her size. I know that pacman was there since last year. Good thing she's not blind. Not only that, she's staying in a VERY tiny BETA FISH enclosure together with 3 other frogs with nothing but PEBBLES and water.
The only reason we bought her was because she's the only albino left in my state.
Now, she's living in a tall terrarium with fluker moss with lots of plants, flower, and shallow pond with small fishes. She's mainly eating crickets now and not GOLD FISH! I like seeing her eat crickets but most of the time, I feed her because it's my first time to own a pacman and she excites me (not in a sexual way)Now, she's not thin anymore and she's really out going although I like her more when she just sit and hide under the moss.
You know, I'm planning to put a prism inside my terrarium to create rainbow so every morning, just when the sun is about to rise, a rainbow will show too Isn't that just sweet What you think?
