Culturing lesser waxworms

markj Jan 07, 2004 11:13 PM

I am going to aqcuire some of these to start feeding my frogs because my cultures are doing poorly and I always like more food sources. I have found a guy on frognet who sells media, but I would like to know what it consists of, and how you actually culture them, because all I know is you need a tank, moths and food and thats about all I know. Any help would be great on this, thanks

I use a media made out of regular Kibbles n Bits dog food crushed fine in a blender mixed with enough honey to make it congeal, but not too syrupy. Put in a ventilated container and the waxworms go crazy.

I have used a 1 to 1 mixture of Bran and honey
and have cultures going for about a year now.

The bran is cheap and you can get it in bulk at most
grain/feed stores

I set mine up in 32oz. deli cups like the ones used for
fruitflies but use a solid lid instead of the vented ones(
the larva chew through the mesh)

So once I get the moths I just put them in the jars until they lay? I just need a complete overview of the process, what themps should the be kept at? Thanks a lot, my frogs will really enjoy this!
