keeping gopher tortoises

contemplate Jun 04, 2003 11:10 PM

hello, i live in central florida and there seem to be quite a few gopher tortoises (i forgot the latin name) around here. their numbers are in decline and they're a protected species, but i think you can get a permit to keep them. does anyone know where i might go to get a permit. it'd be nice to take in some that are injured by cars, and possibly breed them. i wonder if hatchlings could be successfully released into the wild? thanks for your time

I also live in Florida, St Pete area. I love the gophers and would love to help them out also. I found one about 3 years ago and kept it as a pet for a week before I found out that it was illegal, so we let it go where we had found it. I know you can become a licensed rehabber, but I don't know the logistics. Check with the Wildlife commission. Good luck!
