tiger salamander info

zigor Jan 08, 2004 12:39 AM

hello. ive been reading about tiger salamanders online for a few days and im thinking about getting one. they look like jim henson characters to me.
i keep reptiles and its not something im going to lose interest in and drop into a creek in the middle of winter.
i was wondering if you could post your favorite salamander website links, caresheets and information.
i still have alot of answered questions that i want to know before i bring one home. like how many worms, crickets etc should i feed it per feeding session and questions about humidity levels.

thanks for your time

I hear ya, tiger salamanders look like Grover on Sesame Street, don't they, heh heh!

Besides this forum, caudata.org is another forum with lots of info and help concerning salamanders, more specifically, it is: http://www.caudata.org/forum/ and full of good people. Between this kingsnake forum and caudata.org, you are going to be in good hands!

Here's a pic of one of my tiger sals. They really are fun to keep. They do spend a lot of their time underground, but that's just how they are. And when they do come up, it is a lot of fun to feed them; they really get into it, sometimes leaping at you to get a cricket!
Also, I have found them a great sal for people who have other, more demanding reptiles like snakes. They require little daily labor on the keeper's part, what with being buried a lot of the time. Your main job with these guys is to clean out any visible feces, and change substrate regularly, and water daily.
I prefer to keep my substrate slightly dry, to minimize fruitfly infestations which always occur in my house for some reason.
Any other questions, ask away!
