Best time to go herping

JohnStyner Jan 08, 2004 10:00 AM

I am planning a trip out west to the Twenty-nine Palms area in S. California just south of the mojave desert for a week to do some lizard and snake hunting with my brother(photos only).

In spring what would be best time to see the most herps?

Regards,
John Styner

I'd say late April to May. Depending on the weather you could see stuff as early as March. The later the better to ensure warm weather especially warmer nights.

I don't know about the snakes, John, but if you want to maximize your chances of viewing diurnal desert lizards such as collareds and chucks I would recommend planning your So. CA trip for April or May. Any more precise estimation of when conditions might be most favorable this spring will depend in large part on the amount and timing of mountain/desert precipitation in the next few months...
