Edward * What kinds of dogfoods have you had the best luck with>

eve Jan 08, 2004 10:18 AM

I ask because, I orginally started giving Chiquita, cooked chicken. When I would try different sorts of high quality dogfoods with chicken, she has refused them.

Although she has done extremely well and has grown, tremendously in the 2 years I've had her, I feel as though her diet is not as varied as it should be because she only picks certain things and leaves others.

Believe me this in not from a lack of trying, she just has her own favorites, the rest will sit there.
Purina one has a dog buiscut, lamb and rice, if I wet one and smash it she likes them, but thats it.

She likes some fruit (especially banana) loves those slimey garden slugs, canned snails, veggies, but only our cooked chicken, no canned meats.

Do you find any special dog food that they will like?
Thanks, Appreciate it !

Hi, Eve:
Thanks for asking. I strongly advocate (as you've probably noticed) giving the skinks as much variety as possible. They will invariably have favorite foods but I continue to offer them all sorts.
One helpful way to get them to eat more things is to not feed them too often, so that they will be more hungry and therefore more likely to eat what's available. Remember in the wild they pretty much have to eat whatever they come across. I seriously doubt a typical BTS in its natural habitat consumes a large number of any one food item.
Another also helpful tip is to cut up the food into rather small pieces and mix it all up well to make it more difficult to pick out favorite items.
I won't recommend specific brands of dog food, but any high quality, low-fat kind should do. Try different flavors, too, not just chicken and mix in veggies, fruits, etc.
Also, I need to emphasize I do not feel canned anything is the best option. I prefer fresher foods, including cooked meats, so try other things besides chicken, like lean meats, liver, etc.
Best of luck.

I honestly would prefer her to get fresh meats. I don't even give my dogs canned. When ever we have chicken some always comes out for her, minus seasonings of whatever, hehehehe.

But I have tried beef, turkey, lamb, with no interest. I will try your liver, recommendation though.

Actually Edward I will re try them all, but let her be more hungry as you said.
You may have hit it on the head, She usually dont have to wait long for anything, one look up at me and shes got me, My Fault !

Thanks again, and nice talking to you, I have always read your posts, but usually leave a pic and go down the street to collareds, main home, but I'm all over, lots of lizard and frog children, :0)
