Question for the experts

This is something I've been wondering for a long time, but have never seen adressed on this forum. Why do the colors and patterns seem more pronounced closer to the head on some snakes, especially hatchlings. Am I just crazy or what. Like anery's usually show the yellow near the head but not at the tail. I've seen motley's who show a real pretty mot patern near the head with normal markings at the tail. I may be totally off here but this sure seems common to me. Any responses will be appreciated.

Jim
