Best time for herping in the mojave

JohnStyner Jan 08, 2004 10:40 AM

Hello all,
I am planning a trip out west to the Twenty-nine Palms area in S. California just south of the mojave desert for a week to do some lizard and snake hunting with my brother(photos only).

In spring what would be best time to see the most herps?

Regards,
John Styner

Things will be very active then. If the weather cooperates! It should be a good year in the sonoran. The area you are looking at is one of the driest places around. Last year it was pretty slim pickings all year from what I was told. If it is an exceptioanally dry year earlier in the spring would be better.

My last March trip to the Sonoran Desert Mts was largely unsuccessful, owing to drought and colder than usual temperatures.

I'm tentatively planning on returning this March (weather pending - I probably will change my plans in the days prior if a norther is projected), but was wondering if there was sufficient moisture for a successful early season in the Mt ranges of Northern LaPaz, Yavapai, Maricopa, and Mohave Counties.

I have just been thinking the same thing. In my feeble opinion, this spring should be pretty good. We have had steady, not heavy moisture throughout the winter.
Things are greening up slowly.
If it keeps up, the wildflower season should make for some killer photo's with all the 5MP camera's out there.

I wouldn't make any predictions. I've been out several times to various areas, including western AZ along the Colorado River, over the last few months and it isn't hard to tell that what moisture we've received has been spotty. Right now we have a little new growth in some areas from the rain AZ got in November and December. But, without some serious rain spread over the next few months I don't foresee a spring with abundant wildflowers and associated herp activity.
