how do you guys attache stuff in your cage...

lele Jan 08, 2004 01:24 PM

...I have been using the small zip ties, but I am really hating the holes they are putting in my screen - after spending over $100 on it.

Just wondering how others do it. It would be neat if those who make the cages had some sort of way built into the cage itself (if i really DID have as much time as many of you think I do - haha! I would design one myself )

Try using fishing line. It is thin and strong and should go through the holes in the screen.
I would wrap it around the frame of the cage for heavier items.
The only thing with fishing line is you will have to learn to tie a fishing knot with it or it tends to slip.
You can probably learn to tie one on a fishing site or in a boyscout manual.

Try beading wire and a crimping tube.
You can get this at a bead store or craft store.
Of course you need a pair of crimping pliers too.
It's easy for me because I make jewelry so I already have these items but fishing line is the cheaper way to go.

You can also use bread tie's, or the ones u get with trash bags, just stripp the paper off them, then you dont nned to make holes that lil crix can get out of , Dave

My enclosures are pretty much stalls, so there's nothing to attach stuff to. I have small 1x1's along the back, where I can scre large branches in place, but the vast majority of my branches and plants are all intertwined.

I tie the big vines around the trees and branches, and secure them with thin reptivines( the supplier I used to get them from wasn't geetting any more in from China, just the big ones.). They were like 2.00 each, for 6 foot lenghts, and do not deterorate, and are very strong. the ones I bought 3 years ago are just as good as the newer ones. I used to use one of them to hold up a 3 pound piece of grapevine fromt hetop of my veidls cage, and it held fine for a year, before I changed things around. They are thebest way of securing branches to gether, as they are strong, and look great. You could check to see if they got any more in.
The company is Twin Oaks, in Kentucky or tennesee, cannot remember. I did a quick check on their site, and they're on their price list again, which may or may not mean a thing, I need ot check.

If they DO have them, I suggest everyone pick some up. Unlike the stuff normally used, these do not fall apart, and these hold their bend 100%--well, the big ones are a bit stiff, but the small ones are awesome) and at $2 for 6 feet, you can afford to use them for anything.

You'd be amazed how much you can get "up in the air" by tying branches to trees to branches with these vines. They hold MUCH more than twist ties, they look great, and they provide great pathways for chameleons. I'll attach a pic or two . In them, you can see the thinner vines, I usually spiral them around sticks and larger vines for effect and for increased strength.

These people at twin oaks started selling glass terreriums at the carolina reptile shows a few years back--they work glass themselves, so they charge about half the price petstores do. Recently, they started selling aquariums for similar prices.

example: their 90 galon tanks are $140. Ours was $300. they used to only deliver with their own trucks to local reptile shows on the east coast, but now they ship.

They've got a great buisness, I encourage peole to check them out.

I talk to them at the reptile shows I work at all the time...

I had the same problem and it irked me. I now build my own and can put biovine anywhere i want on the wood inside and no screen damage.
I remember asking about attaching but gave up since i would have to make small holes i the screen and like you said mess up a $100 cage. Small holes become big holes.
If it makes you feel better i'm an at home dad with way to much time on my hands. There you'r not alone

lele Jan 08, 2004 02:50 PM

yes, I know I am yelling - and smiling

I work, go to school, volunteer, etc. etc. My problem is that I do CAD stuff on my computer and homework and I have cable so I am always online - the minute I turn this damn thing on! Sometimes I pine for the ol'dial-up! haha!

If I had all that time on my hands I would be fine-tuning and patenting half the stuff I come up with and I would definitely be building my own cages! I do design for a living so I am often insprired - but sometimes need the obvious pointed out and knew that folks would love to share - because that's what we do here! LOL!

Of course the obvious twist ties, and other wire have been considered, but as soon as you put any stress on them there go the holes. Once Luna has dumped her eggs and is back to "normal" I have some ideas with velcro and other items but I don't want to stress her anymore for now so I was looking for a quick fix for securing some branches.

When I get around to test-marketing my designs I'll be sure to use you guys as my testers!!

You can take a stick of gum, and chew it for about two minutes..
Take it out of your mouth and firmly affix it to the item you want to attach. Hold the item against a flat surface and it will stick. If it falls off, thats ok, just chew the gum for a few more minutes and hold it back against the flat surface.
Repeat this process for the lenght of time you would like an item attached to another.

Sorry Lele..
You already had some good responses.. So, I had to throw a little humor in there.

I would recommend fishing line. Because it is fiber-less strong and small enough to fith through screen.

You know how it's recommended to run a bead of silicone on the wire cages to keep crix in the cage??? You can use a droplet of the same stuff on the cage to affix (or attache as you use)stuff to the frame and even the screen. I do this on my cages to hold up branches and stuff.

Can't patent that...sorry!!

Actually, that's a good idea!!

I know, can you believe I wrote attache! Yikes, I didn't even notice until the 3rd or 4th response! LOL! But, again, I have exclusion from any grammar or spelling reprimanding b/c I was the one who posted the spelling article - that does give me immunity, right??

I've been using training wire, it's normally used in gardens to train vines where to go. It's thin but strong. Plus it's green so blends in nicely. lol I've also used a few paper clips, unbent, to hang the feeding container from (it has an edge around it, so the clips slide in there).

gomezvi Jan 09, 2004 08:35 AM

Along these lines (pardon the pun) I use bonsai wire. Being that it's aluminimum, it bends easily, has good strength, and does not corrode.
You might be able to find non-bonsai aluminum wire at a welding supply store.
