How to store frozen feeders..

Tigergenesis Jan 08, 2004 01:35 PM

I'd like to buy some feeders from the reptile show, but you have to buy in counts of 50. How do I properly freeze them so that they stay good?

Well, I have found that keeping them in the freezer works quite well. Just kidding...I know what you mean. I just keep them in a ziplock freezer bag, use what I need and seal the bag back up and put it back in the freezer. They will keep for a good 3 months or more in ziplock bags, even being opened and closed frequently. I buy bulk animals that are vacuum sealed, then when I open one of the vacuum sealed packages, I just place the remainder in the ziplocks. How many is in a vacuum packed package depends on what size animal it is. Pinkie mice come 50 to a package, pinkie rats are 25 to a package, adult mice are 50 to a package, rats depending on size are anywhere from 6 to 15 to a package.

Guess I set myself up for that one. LOL.

Okay, that's what I did. I actually put them in 2-3 layers of freezer bags. I don't usually keep my food in the freezer too long so I never have to worry about it and I wasn't sure how to properly store something that long. How do I know when they've gone bad or shouldn't be used anymore?

Good question. I haven't had any stay around long enough to go bad. I wouldn't be afraid to use them for up to a year, though. I think after that, I would throw them out.

Sounds good. The guy I bought them from said the same thing - just wanted to be certain.

Thanks!
