OK, new question...administering meds...

lele Jan 08, 2004 02:58 PM

Now this is serious. Luna loves me but she will hate me soon if I have to keep forcing stuff down her throat! And b/c of Kaiya aspirating (for those of you who remember) I am VERY afraid of that. granted Kaiya was 1 gram and Luna is 70, but still....

OK, my vet said to give her .07 N-Cg twice a day - I am lucky if I get half of one dose in her. I have a plastic catheter and I can get her mouth open but I find if I give it toward the front of her mouth she maneuvers her tongue and much of it dribbles (this is sticky, stuff, too!) if I put it far back I feel like I am choking her! Just now after giving it to her I saw it coming out of her nostrils! Just a single drop - but still...
This cannot be a good thing! I wiped it off with warm, wet q-tip but I felt so bad!

Repta-aid? Won't even try!

Once again, I long for your expertise - or do you guys just FORCE it on them and say tough s#*t!!

Oh lele...you're such a softy!!

just teasing, of course. I think it's so sweet the way you mother Luna!

If I'm not mistaken you give Luna some of her water through a syringe, right?
What I do with Zoe is have 2 syringes ready, one with just water, and the other with water and the medicine.
I drip the plain water one onto his nose, and once I get Zoe drinking from the water syringe (so no medicine is wasted), I switch to the syringe with the meds and water in it, and let him think it's just his regular water.
I put a much smaller amount of water in with the medicine, so as not to waste it, and once that's finished I switch back to the syringe with just plain water in it.

good luck...

Hi Kim,

yeah, me and the Pillsbury dough boy - a couple of softies! hehe

Well, I had mixed the N-Cg with water before but didn't use two syringes. So this morning I did the water/N-Cg. It was very watered down but I figured I would see how easily she could be fooled...you know, she's not your average cham :D

THEN I decided to add to the mix some watered down Repta-Aid (she has not eaten anything but 2 flies for DAYS!!). She seemed fine with it! Yipee! So this will be her breakfast, lunch and dinner. At least I know she's getting SOME nutrients! Sure wish she'd show some signs of dropping those eggs! Even if she drops them like "justchams" - right off the branch(!) I just want her back to "normal." Sure hope this is only once a year!!!

Btw, Kim, in a MUCH earlier post you asked about her age and being gravid and I don't think I ever got back to you. Ohana, Luna's sister that Sonia still has, laid about 3 weeks ago. I had hoped it wasn't going to be until she was a year but I seem to have lost that control I had over Mother Nature - LOL!!

Thanks!
lele

The fact that you saw it come out the nostril is bad. The air hole they breathe from is at the floor of the mouth and to the front.
Putting it way back in the throat is the best way to keep her from choking.
Sometimes it is best to say tough s@#$ and put it way back there quickly and be done with it.
Of course that is easy for me because if I show mine my fingers they open up hoping to be able to draw some blood!
Sometimes to be kind you have to be a real witch, The calcium drops are important now because without enough Calcium she won't be able to lay them.
On the other hand the faster you finish the less stress she will have to deal with stress is bad especially with gravid chams.
Mother nature can be a big pain in the neck.
By the way Ohana laid 48 eggs I left some at the bottom of the tub when I dug it up and found them today.
Of course they were starting to rot since none are fertile.
I know it was near Christmas but there was no star in the east!

Thanks! Yeah, I guess I'll have to play tough love. I can do the kind way and mix it with water but I know she is not then getting as much as she needs to. She has been "hiding" toward the back of her cage and a little dark All I think of is seeing Ohana doing the same thing the day after you force fed her - I don't want Luna to change!!

Why do your chameleons try to bite you? I have five and none of them bite. In fact except for one female they never gape at me either and I keep veiled which are supposely aggressive.

I can vouch for Stitch, my sweet Luna's brother, whom I met when I met Sonia last month. He is just a terror...(Sonia, did I send you the pix?)
