Dixie Reptile Show?

LaBete Jan 08, 2004 03:13 PM

Does anyone here have any idea what breeders/vendors to expect at the Dixie Reptile Show (http://www.dixiereptileshow.com/)? Any experience with the show, what size it is, what variety of reptiles offered, etc.? Next week's DRS will be my first, so I was hoping to get the scoop on it.

Thanks!

Personally, it's not that great of a show. I live approximately 2.5 hours away and have been twice, hoping it will get better. I was disappointed both times. I can't recall any big name breeders that were there. Most of the people there seemed to be locals with little or no knowledge of reptiles/amphibians. And there weren't very many "vendors" there at all (I'd say around 30 max). Some of the animals were very sickly looking and were covered in ticks and mites.

There were only two tables worth viewing. There was a couple there that had leopard geckos (probably close to a 100 of them) and they were all extremely healthy and fat and were gorgeous. And the other table was a guy who had several tarantulas/scopions that were very healthy. Both these tables were ran by people who were very knowledgeable about what they were selling.

The "coolest" and most expensive animal there was a young emerald tree boa being sold (for a whopping $650 and he was your normal northern not a basin). Pretty and healthy but expensive nonetheless.

If you live fairly close to the show, I recommend going by to see what is available. It may have changed and become much better since it's been over a year since I was last there.

Wish they would improve it...more vendors, better/healthier animals, more knowledgeable people!

Let us know what it is like if you happen to go.

Just my honest opinion!
Thanks,
Michael

Thank you very much for your detailed response, Michael. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I also live about 2.5 hours away, so it was within reasonable day trip distance but not exactly nearby. Do you know of any other daytrip-distance shows from Atlanta? I know there is an Atlanta show in November, but that is a long time away. I still plan to go, though, and see what there is to be seen, and I'll be happy to report back.

I'm hoping to find two normal, healthy, inexpensive juvenile BP's, one male, one either sex, that I can check out personally before buying (one for my roommate, one for my cousin). I can deal with a case of mites if I have to, but I'd rather not.

Not sure of any day shows within fairly close distance to ATL. If you are looking for some BPs, the Dixie show had plenty of them last time I was there but again, they were apparently imports. Who knows, someone may have some healthy CBB BPs there this time around. I wish the Dixie show would announce who was going to be at the show and list some types of animals that will be available to buy.

Anyways, good luck and keep me informed if you go to the Dixie show.

Thanks, Michael. I appreciate the info, and it's particularly good to know that there were BPs at the show. I will definitely check them out thoroughly before considering buying any, especially since my current BP came to me sick and has needed a lot of TLC to get better. It would definitely be good to have an updated list of exhibitors/vendors available pre-show.

Thanks again for your help.
