extremely weird panther

justchams Jan 08, 2004 04:03 PM

My female panther seemed to be gravid and so I placed a bucket of sand in her cage. However she decided not to dig and release her egs but rather to kind of lay them hanging from her branches, in other words, throw them to the bottom of the cage.

The bucket size, sand and setup seems to be fine (as I have used it before for other females with good results). Nonetheless she is not using it.

Any advise? what should I expect? I guess, there is the possibility that she will remain with eggs inside of her?

Any comments highly appreciated.

thanks.

Can she see other animals or chams from her cage.
For my females I put a drape across the front of her cage for several days before she lay them to help her feel secure enough to come down and lay them.
How many did she drop. If it is a small number try the laying bin again and a drape and she may lay more.

Every so often someone posts that their female did this. There may be a higher chance of a retained egg. It seemed to me that the posts about females who just dropped their eggs this way were either not given a proper laying area (but you did) and they ended up not dropping the whole clutch. Watch her for signs of sickness (lethargy, no appetite, crouching in one place, not responding to lights or temp changes). If she shows symptoms have a vet check her for a retained egg.

Thanks Anson and Carlton.

I can still feel at least one egg inside of her.

She still has the bin and sand in case she wants to dig. she has been basking a lot.

what options do I have? take her to vet?

thanks.

If she is making no attempt to expel the egg I think a vet should see her. I don't know if a retained egg always goes bad and causes peritonitis or if it can be re-absorbed past a certain developmental stage. More info Breeders?
