Las Vegas or Tremper, what do you think?

aliceinwl Jun 05, 2003 12:46 AM

This is a male that I purchased at the Pomona show in Dec 2002. The vendor I purchased him from said that he was a Las Vegas albino from the Gourmet Rodent. His pupils, however, are red like those of a Tremper. I've got him in with some Las Vegas hets I purchased from other breeders, but they aren't gravid yet. Should I throw in a Tremper het?

Gourmet Rodent works with Trempers, to my knowledge...

Yep, I'd have to agree with that. Brants work with Trempers.

This skrews up all my plans! And, at the time I really wanted a Tremper, but since he was so pretty I decided to branch out into rainwaters. I threw a Tremper het in with him tonight, I'll see what happens.

Pretty sweet looking gecko you snagged by the way. If it is a tremper then breeding it to a tremper het should get you half and half. 50% albinos and 50%hets. Pretty good ratio, huh? I had the same problem, Thought I was breeding rainwaters all year long and ended up getting an email from Bill Brant telling me that all the albinos they produce are from the Tremper strain. But ending up with some pretty nice little critters so far, so I can't complain too much... Looks like you'll get some beautiful animals outta that leopard you've got posted though.

I'm sure glad I posted. I would have been in for a rude awakening when I went to breed my double hets to a real rainwater next year. If I'd only known he was a Tremper, I would have made him my primary breeder rather than Bacchus.

Is that gecko eating that cute tang albino baby? I would not let a gecko that size NEAR a hatchling. They can eat them before you can say "What the %^&*!"

aliceinwl Jun 05, 2003 09:54 PM

No he's not eating her! That's actually his daughter that I incubated using Tremper's method. I had them both out of their cage, and I did a lot of posing so they were pretty excited, the male had a full belly and I was literally never more than 6" away, so the photo shoot went great!

by any chance did you buy him from "rising sun reptiles"?? i bought one from them and when i asked the strain, they said it was gourmet rodent stock, i took that as an "i dont know".

aliceinwl Jun 05, 2003 02:31 AM

Yes, I got him from Rising Sun. At the time I really wanted a light phase tremper so when I asked if he was a tremper the man at the table told me no, he was a Rainwater albino from gourmet rodent stock. I decided to get him anyway and purchased a rainwater het from geckos etc to breed him with. I bought another rainwater albino male het for pat at a show last month to breed with double hets he's producing with my pats this season.

If he's a tremper this throws a kink in all my plans for next season!

Do you know what yours is?

iluvblackfrancis Jun 06, 2003 12:58 AM

mine is tremper.

jcgecko Jun 05, 2003 10:57 AM

I personally believe it is a tremper but it wouldn't matter a tremper would mate with a las vegas they are all leopard geckos. Its like saying that a tangerine wouldn't mate with say a normal or that a patternless wouldn't mate with an albino - where do you think patternless albinos came from? haha don't worry he looks kind of skinny may be to young to breed yet, also remember they usually breed at night so you may not see them. We need some more info to asess your problem. Were they given a brumation period? how long have they been together? How old and what are the weights of the geckos? Its most likely that the females once thrown all together were too stressed out to allow the male to breed. Thats my input at least .Good luck and post back.

i do not think he is worried about them not breeding i think he is wondering what his albino is and whether or not if it is a compatable strain. tremper and rainwaters are not compatable so if he has a tremper albino someone mislabled as rainwater albino and he is trying to breed for rainwaters, with that breeding he wont get a single albino the most he will get is 100% het tremper albino and poss het rainwater all of the offspring normal looking

It's an old picture and he's gained weight since I got him and the pic makes him look skinnier than he was at the tiem. I've already got babies from him hatching from the melanistic female, and the patternless females I have in with him.
