Morgana might be eating the substrate..!

dextar Jan 08, 2004 08:41 PM

I am not sure exactly if she is eating it or not, but for the past two days or so, she has always had a little dirt on her face. I noticed some today, before I gave her a warm bath and gave her some batryl. I washed it off, and a few hours later she had more dirt on her face.

I use 'Bed-a-Beast' for substrate, and the packaging says its safe and 100% bio-degradable. I think its just some sort of dried and compressed coconut mulch. My concern though is if it is safe for her to be eating it if she is. And also why would she be doing something like this? I don't believe I have any worms in the substrate at the time. Unless of course one escaped, but that wouldn't explain why its been on her face numerous times.

Also does anyone know what this means:

3.8.0 Leopard Geckos
1.1.0 A.Capra

I see this type of notation in a lot of peoples signatures on this website, and I'm not sure exactly what the numbering signifies.

Thanks,
Derek

if you have seen her with dirt on her face check to see if she has been digging any holes. She may be gravid and starting to dig to look for a nest to lay her eggs. She may have also already laid them and packed the dirt on top of them which would have left dirt on her face too. As for the notation like 1.1.0, that means that they have 1 male, 1 female, and 0 unknown gender of that species. so 3.2.0 would be 3 males, 2 females and 0 unkown's. Typically the unknowns are juveniles that can't be sexed yet.

I was suspicious of her being gravid, but I wouldn't think that she would be digging so early. I have palpated her and do not feel eggs. So I don't think she would be digging this early if she is gravid, unless of course she THINKS she's going to lay sometime soon.

Is there any other reason why she would be digging and/or sticking her face in the substrate? (I have kind of crossed off being gravid, and hunting for insects).

Thanks for the reply,
Derek
