more tile questions.....

lanietx Jan 08, 2004 08:50 PM

i too am considering tile.....

i assume that everyone is cutting the tile if it doesn't fit to the cage?????
will cutting the tile leave a sharp edge?
is there a cheap tile cutting device?

my gecko home is a 55 gallon aquarium. with the way my luck goes, i am sure the chances are very slim that i would be able to simply purchase tiles and have them fit with no adjustments.

i can't wait to get to lowes or home depot to look at the tile!
it will be several days tho. i have a dental conference to attend the next several days
i know!!!!!! dental conference, i have my priorities all wrong!!

i apologize if this question has been asked in the past, i haven't been able to keep up with the forum lately

thanks!

I actually bought a 20 liter tank today, and got some tile to put in it. I bought vinyl tile though, instead of the porcelain or slate or whatever...it looks very realistic and was cheaper than the "real" tile, and I was able to cut it with scissors! It was preglued...so I just put paper on the back of it for now. When I have to clean it allover I'll have to think of smt...but for now it works and looks great!

I have recently bought ceramic tile for the custom enclosures I am building. Lowes here in FL has a wet saw right in the tile asile. I am sure you could get an employee to cut some of your tiles if need be. Just make sure you measure your 55 gal very accurately. Should be next to no cost if any. Hope this helps.

Well, The Home Depot that I work at has a handful of (ceramic) tiles on clearance right now - I think I paid $0.77 per 12x12 tile.

Also I'd say its very likely that any store like Home Depot or Lowes will in fact have a tile cutting saw and make the cuts for you.

The price at Home Depot is $1.00/cut but at the two stores I've worked for that rarely gets charged.

As for sharp edges -- I was concerned about this too -- I was pretty surprised to find the edges weren't all that sharp. I'm actually more worried about my gecko pinching a toe off in the tile to tile seams (though its a tight fit and I really, really, don't forsee a problem).

I hope this helps some!

i am going to take my tank measurements tonite and go to home depot or lowes tomorrow. there is not a local store here, but i will be in dallas tomorrow. i pass by about 3 stores. i am sure one of them will have a saw.

i am thinking i might leave a small space between tiles and pack it with some sort of calcium sand. i think that would keep little toes from being pinched.
