Digital Thermometers for Computers

antonm Jan 08, 2004 10:29 PM

I was looking into digital thermometers for my geckos today and thought of something. I figured it might be possible for me to obtain a thermometer that hooks up in some way to my computer. This way, I could monitor the temps on my comp and maybe even record data for future reference. Has anyone ever tried this or looked into it?

Hi Antonm,

you can get data collectin units (DCU) that will connect to your pc via usb, but unfortunately they are not cheap. Most of them are designed for laboratory use, and are therefore designed with much higher accuracy that is needed by us. A quick search on google came up wit this http://www.picotech.com/pt100.html If you search around, it is possible there are cheaper models around.

Cheers

Hi,as a reply to Dams post i know where you you get a DCU for free just go to download.com and download kazza program then once you download that search for DCU on kazza or data collection unit and you should get some good programs.

You can probably get programs on kazaa or download.com for interpreting the data and putting it into graphs, but unfortunately you'll still need a fairly expensive piece of hardware to actually connect with the tepmerature/humidity probes and convert it into data that a computer can use (i.e a DCU). I do think there are cheaper ones around though.

Ok, i foubd a cheaper one at www.maplin.co.uk, search for Data Logger and there's a model for about £120. It looks ideal, but i'm sure theres better ones on the market (i.e temp and humdity, not temp and pH).

Thanks for the input guys. I dont think I can drop 120$ on a thermometer right now so thats out of the question. I was looking more for a small probe for like 20-30 that would hook into the USB or a Serial/Com port or something. Thanks anyway.
