Unusual time and temps???

herpetological Jan 08, 2004 10:29 PM

We've been still coming across plenty of herps here in S. Fl. However, last night we found a 17" male scarlet King actively cruising at 10:00 PM. Not unusual except that it was 58-60 degrees F. and we haven't had any rain! Was laying on the front porch! Must be a snowbird from the northern portion of their range!! LOL's!!I'll post pics later... Thanks Ray G. HBR www.herpbreedingresearch.com

Nice catch! I went out looking for some scarlet kings the other day and found a black racer and a few ground skinks, but unfortunately no scarlets. It was about 62-64* and was about 3 in the afternoon. I'm up on the panhandle near Pensacola. Just thought I'd share since it seemed odd to me too.-Smokey

Back when Davie Florida was still undeveloped (the 80's)it had the local reputation of being the Scarlett King capitol of South Florida. The best catching days for them (and even more so for L. getula) were the milder days of the winter season.
Though my strangest catch was near Bell Florida (on Christmas eve temp in the low 50's) a 4' Pink phase Canebreak crossing a back road.
