My new baby albino!

StinaUIUC Jan 08, 2004 11:35 PM

Darnit...I had a really long post and then I accidentally hit the back button!!!!! grrr... Anyway...

Ok...so we seem to have caught her (I have no idea...I just keep calling it her for some reason!) in the middle of shedding, so she's got some skin stuck on her tail and legs and a little on her head...but none on her feet so I left her alone. If she has any tomorrow I'll get out a q-tip. Now...she is definitely albino, that I know for sure...lol However I'm not sure of the strain or her color phase. I would say tremper for sure, but she looks like a tang too...Because I know tang isn't common for a pet store it makes me consider that she may not be a tremper...Also, she doesn't have much brown at all on her except a tiny bit in her tail...I don't know...I could really use some help with her color/strain! To me she looks like a tang albino, but I'm no expert and could really use some help with that part. The only other thing about her is that she seems a little skinny (not so much skinny as just not "plump"...she doesn't have much fat stored in her tail). Other than that she absolutely gorgeous and very active! She's been climging around her rubbermaid (I don't have a third tank so she's stuck in a plastic thing...lol) ever since I turned the "night lights" on. Ok, so I'd like some help with her "color stats" and I'd like to know if $35 sounds like a good deal (it sounded fantastic to me when I saw her and she was priced the same as the normals). I'd really appreciate any opinions on those subjects!

Anyway, here's the pics. If you can't see them, don't want to wait (they're very large! sorry 'bout that!), or want to see more, just go to my gecko's album on webshots (community.webshots.com/album/109855490yPVMBE)

This is her current housing situation...it's not perfect but for now it'll do her. The container in the top left is her humid hide, the shell is basically just a dry place for her to hide on the warm side of the tank, and the thing at the bottom right is her cool hide. She was hiding under the shell when I took the pic.

This pic is sideways...but that's how she was hiding

hmm where did you get that leo..it doesnt look very healthy...
i could be mistaken but is that retained shed on its leg and tail?
and its tail isnt too fat...it doesnt look like a hatchling...
im not saying this as an insult, of course not
but just a suggestion...
if you see a leo that has a tail that skinny...
dont buy it..i've learned the hard way twice...

I agree, he's a lil on the thin side. Give the guy a warm bath, water up to his shoulders, for about 30 min so he can get that skin off, otherwise he'll have problems later (more bad sheds, skin infection, loss of toes, etc).

I seem to notice that leos do better if they're given hides where they can find near complete darkness. Since the humid hide you have is sorta transparent, he might not use it much (they like a bit of privacy).

Also, seems like you can use a thermometer or two. You don't want the temp on the warm side to go over 95 deg F, and should be atleast 85. Cool side should be around 75-80, can dip down lower to like 70 in the evening.

and is that calcium/vitamin powder the mealworms are in? That can potentially be pretty bad, one way to get hypercalcemia, or Vit D3 poisoning, since your leo will swallow a mouthful everytime he goes in to grab a meallie, just coating them a lil, and offering him a separate dish of powder on the side will probably work better.

wish you the best of luck with him. I'm actually kinda starting out as well, but I spent like the last 2 years researching so that I don't make any mistakes (but I'm finding I still have a ton of questions, but looks like no one wants to answer them here).

I realize that she's a little bit thin... I also know about the shedding skin. I think we sort of caught her in the middle of shedding at the pet store and it stressed her out so she stopped trying to get it off. There wasn't any on her toes...so I didn't worry about it too incredibly much. I checked this morning and there's a little bit still stuck on her tail, so I'm gonna go ahead and get that off. She's actually in the humid hide right now, which I am going to make dark...I was just kinda throwing things together last night because I was shifting my girls around. The calcium dish does not have mealworms in it...I just threw some of that jarred gecko food (the dried fly stuff...) into it to see if they would eat it that way at all. I am getting mealworms today, and they will not be in calcium powder like that...I was just seeing what they would do. I know about D3 overdoses and stuff. Also, I do need to get a couple more thermometers...again, I was throwing stuff together last night...she was an unexpected purchase so I had to put stuff together for her as I was moving the others into bigger tanks. This was all thrown together last night, and today I'm going to the pet store for mealworms, a couple dark lights and thermometers.

I certainly hope so. She looks like she is dehydrated and possibly sick, her tail looks like it has lost weight (the wrinkles) and also wrinkles in her abdominal skin. A warm bath should help that unshed skin. I would definately get her a fecal.
