Perhaps a dumb question, but...

I've seen a lot of posts about force-feeding. Is this a common practice? Why do so many chams refuse to eat?

I would consider force feeding the very last resort.

It's stressful to the animal and most people end up making the animal or chameleon worse of than it was in the first place.

It is a common practice but only with animals that are on the edge of death...unfortunetly with chameleons, sometimes they are the type of animal that will look totally fine one day and drop dead the next.

Force feeding is especially difficult with small hatchlings or baby chameleons. Not a recommended practice in my opinion. Usually you can try other various things before resorting to that.
