mistysprouse Jan 09, 2004 12:55 AM

a friend of mine asked me if ky is a lube that can be used when using the probe method. I don't know anything about sexing so I thought I would ask you guys.

KY jelly is ideal for lubricating probes when sexing snakes.

If you plan on breeding the animal in the near future.

No problems with it. It is a myth. Is this what were referring to?

I was wondering what was wrong with KY. I thought it was a pretty inert thing. Thought I was stupid because I have never heard that.

Thank you for clarifing that. I would like to ad that some KY lubes DO in fact have spermicide.
I will admit, I thought ALL KY products contained spermicides. Thanks again for clearing that up.

Could you please direct me to the brand name? I believe KY is KY no spermicide. KY stand for one product by Johnson & Johnson.

side guestion why are there all different sizes of probes, how do you tell which one you should use? when I was at the vet she probed my 6 foot redtail but then switched to a smaller probe after starting with a larger one. just trying to understand all of this.

KY is the prefered lubricant for most people when using probes. I've heard some people say that you shouldn't use petroleum based lubricants (like vasaline) because it can supposedly be bad for the snake. I don't know where there is any proof of this. I've used both and have never had problems with snakes that I've used either of these on when breeding for me.

As far as probe sizes, you should try to use the largest probe that will fit the hemipenile pocket in order to reduce the chance of perforating the hemipenis. A lot of people (including me) will double check a 'questionable' female with the next smaller sized probe.
