Rat snake had horrible shed... majior adivice needed

oogieboogie Jan 09, 2004 02:36 AM

Ok oogieboogie is a Leusistic Texas Rat. Id venture to guess about 2 1/2 feet feeding great and growing fast. Her first 4 or so sheds were absolutely flawless. This time around she had some majior difficulties. There is still skin attatched to her body that will not come off. I have tried soaking her in a humidity box, soaking her in some water, rubbing her down with some minmeral oil and nothing will work.

Here are some pictures of her shed....

What should I do with her? Im worried about leaving the skin on, but it is not looking like its going to come off. When I go to peel it off of her it wont budge, it takes her whole skin with her.

Try putting him in a damp pillow case (not sure of how long, though, use your best judgement). Keep the snake in a warm area while he's in the pillow case.

2 or 3 hours for bad sheds... works wonders... I use a rubbermaid with holes and a damp towel, though.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

Ok...and you make three. I posted this problema few months ago and another herper had the same problem with Leuc. Tex. Mine does it every shed (looks like a sharpei)nad we have been able to cope with the problem by letting her soak in a shallow pan when she goes into shed. I'm not sure what causes this problem, but I will speculate that the sub-dermal fluids that separate the dead layer and allow a snake to properly shed are not forming or collecting where they should.
