Updated Images of Tank and Frogs ( lots of images )

rjmarchisi Jan 09, 2004 08:48 AM

Well I finally got back around to editing and posting the most recent images.

29 gallon that houses 4 Azureus, think I have 1 really fat female and 3 males. Once I take more pictures of the individuals I will post them for everyone elses opinion. I also noticed that about an hour before the lights go out 3 of the 4 frogs get together, huddle up and sleep in the same place ( in the middle of the tank at the top under the larger Cryptanthus, perhaps I need more hiding places ). I just think its really funny. I really cant believe how quickly the java moss grows and how great it looks.

Nice pictures~
How did you cut the glass for the tops of your tanks? Also, what type of hinges did you us and how are they attached?

Well I had a local glass shop cut the pieces for me. It would have been alot cheaper if not for the 2" diameter holes. I used clear acrylic hinges adhered with clear silicone, havent had any problems with them yet. This is the plan that I drew for the shop.

Very nice tank!!

Also - how does java moss work? I know it's an aquatic plant - how do you get such a lovely lawn in your tank?

thanks!

Well I live in NYC so I just went down to Canal Street and there are tons of plastic supply stores there, but I found a link to the hinges that I used ( 12" Piano Hinge
Non-Tapered Ends ). Whats nice about them is that you can cut the hinges to any lenght and they will still work.

As for the java moss I got a lump of it from one of my friend's fish tanks. It is a 15 gallon hex that has one large african cichlid and hit tank is overgrown with it. Every time I visit him, I just grab a handful. I started some in the lower areas of the tank with part of the moss in the water and some out and it just started to take over. I also have a pump running water down the log in the middle of the tank, so the log is constantly wet. I just draped a small patch of it over the log. I think that to get it started it just needs to be kept constantly damp or extremely humid. To help my plants grow I use a really watered down mixture of "Black Water Extract."

T. Patricia, I got one from Black Jungle and one from Aaron's Frog Farm at the White Plains, New York 3 months ago. When I first got them one was larger than the other, and the smaller one escaped the tank for half a day. Luckily I found it when I got home, under my bed on the wood floor covered with dust. Ever since I bathed it in watered down gatorade it has been eating more and growing quicker than the other one. I am extremely happy with the quality of frogs that both these suppliers produce. Hopefully I got one male and one female, keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks and good luck.
I posted 4 months ago about a yellow back runt that I have who had the runs. I treated him for parasites with no positive response. It it now eating much more and I have deducted that the problem was with competition with the larger more agressive male in the same tank. The big male is nearly full grown and has slowed down in his eating. Its strange having 3 different size frogs from the same clutch in the same tank but its good for the learning curve.

Substrate is Bed-A-Beast mixed with shredded tree fern, and some reptibark. The java moss really doesnt seem to care what it grows on, as it is starting to cover the tropical pillow moss, the ghostwood, river stones and climbing up the front of the tank ( I need to push it back ). It gets pretty firmly rooted on the ghostwood and I have even removed some for another tank and it is already growing back. About 8" above the tank is a 4 foot ( 2 bulb ) shop light bought at home depot. The bulbs that I use were just the brightest ones I could get at the store. I think one is brighter kelvin wise and one produces a more natural spectrum. I can check the specs when I get home tonight if you want to know more.

Could you do me a favor and post a up close picture of the java moss? I'm not really sure what it looks like.
where do I find it?
thanks

Normally java moss is sold as an aquatic plant, Petland and Petco rarely if ever carry it possibly you could ask your local store to order it for you. I got mine at a "fish" auction in Coney Island, maybe there is a local event by you. The java moss looks extremely different when it is in an aqautic environment, it just looks like a big stringy mess, a green hairball.
