Where's the BEST place to purchase a baby corn snake?

Eydie Jan 09, 2004 11:34 AM

Pet Store or Breeder? Who's the best breeder? I live in the So. CA. area. Thanks!

Breeders are generally better places to purchase corns than pet stores. This isn't always the case, as there are some bad or unscrupulous breeders, and there are also some really nice petstores... but in general, breeders are better, and they can definitely tell you more about your hatchling.

Breeders I'd recommend are Don Soderberg, Kathy Love, and Rich Zuchowski. They're the top three corn breeders, and have some really nice stuff, as well as having quite a variety of morphs.

I just got a great Amel 1.0 from cornsnakemorphs.com. Actually the parent company is exoticsbynature.com, either will take to the same breeding stock. They are located in Lousiana and overnight their stock via UPS. I found the people very nice and helpful and able to answer any questions. My snake arrive on schedule and was ready to explore his new enclosure. They even did a follow call to make sure everything was ok once he arrived. He really is quite beautiful and when I can get good, clear pictures I will post them. I was very happy with the service I recieved and the healthy, nice, picturesque snake I recieved.

If you want to actually see the snake before you buy there is a show coming up in the LA area. There is a breeder at most of the CA shows that goes by Isis Reptiles and I have heard good things about them. I didn't buy anything from them so I can't say from personal experience. Isis is also located in So Cal so you may be able to contact them from their website if you don't want to wait until the show. Just thought I would give you a local option.

Good luck!

Breeder - YES! Pet store - NO! My personal favorite is to go to a reptile show where I can meet many breeder/dealers, and see a nice selection. I am lucky to live near a city that hosts a good one every month. Good luck, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Duffy

Lots of folks will tell you that late spring through early fall (which, of course, includes all summer) is best. That's when lots of new stuff is hatching out. I think there's advantages to attending just about any time of year. Someone posted recently that this time of year is when you find lots of low quality "leftovers"...But I say that if you're a good "shopper", any time of year is good. I got a couple of really nice okeetee a couple of weeks ago for $15 ea. And at this time of year you can tell which ones have been feeding well...mine sure had been and still are.
My answer: Go when YOU feel like it. When there's a show not too far from you, if possible. As often as you can! I wind up going almost every month just to buy frozen rodents. I always look forward to it. My wife just holds her breath and hopes I don't bring home ANOTHER snake. I have enough tupperware (actually Sterilite) stacked up in the former dining room that she doesn't even notice the new arrivals any more until I point them out to her... Ain't life Grand! Duffy

I need to buy one soon. I've got the fever. My kids and I went and held a few snakes today and the other day and I think I've finally gotten over the heebie geebies. The time is now...
