New iguana owner, worried .....

SkylineGTR Jan 09, 2004 03:12 PM

Hey people, Im a new iguana owner, I just bought a 12-13" (including tail) iguana few days ago and just last night I took him/her to a vet (Steve Barten, anyone heard of him ?) ... he checked me iguana and said that he/shes very healthy and he didnt see any problems, he weighted her at 2 ounces, he checked her eyes, nose, mouth, body and said shes in fantastic condition.
Now, when I brought it back home it didnt eat the whole day, and at 7:30 I turned of lights put his NOCTURNAL light dimmed purple, his cage temp was; cool area 75 warm area 85.......anyways, he climbed up his tree, and went to sleep, the next morning when I woke up he was at exact same spot, he didnt move nothing ..... so I picked him up petted him, gave me fresh water and food, put him back, and left ... when I came back he was at EXACT same spot when I put him down ... he didnt touch the water or the food .... what is going on ?? im getting very worried ... and im starting to get upset.
Today when I picked him up he didnt even fight me, he just let me pick him up!!! I was expecting a fight and got nothing ... so basically it didnt eat for 2 days, no water .... very rare activity (98% of time it just sits in one spot till i leave) ... im getting desperate and if this continues this way I might have to give it up
It has a 50 gallon temporary tank ... 75&100WATT Zoo Med BASKING light, and 18" Zoo Med UVB flourosent .... 2 huge branches, fresh food and water .... what is going on please help before I lose it.

Your temps are too low. Jack the basking temp to 95-100 and the abiant temp to 80-85. Raise Humidity to 50-70%. What diet are you feeding? Pics of the ig and pics of the house would help a lot. Give as many details as you can about setup type, temps (already said), diet, bathing, Anything and everything.

Update; humidity now is at 55 .....

SkylineGTR Jan 09, 2004 05:53 PM

The temps I gave were night time, daytime there are 95F and 75F in cool area .... I have to drop the temp from 95 to 80 or so cuz he gets to hot and opens his mouth and never moves by himself, so I cant always watch him so I cant take a risk of overheating and of him dying.

My igs pictures, they didnt come out too good because I didnt use flash, Im affraid it will scare him.

To answer your questions heather, the humidity is about 35-45 .. I dont know how to make it 50, I spary mist but nothing changes.
I feed him/her once a turnip greens, mustand greens and collard greens, and somtimes I include carrots, mango, strawberry and banana (rarly), I give him small doses like the size of his dead and the food is very small about the size of his eyes, never gave him a bath but I will tonight when my wife comes home with the container for it....

I never saw him eat or drink, I know he ate few times few days back cuz the food was missing, but thast about it, for about 2 days now he didnt touch ANYTHING, BUT when we 1st bought him saturday and brought him home, the tank had NO POSTER in the background of the tank, but 2 days ago we put a poster in the bank of the tank to make him feel more home ... maybe that is the reason ? maybe hes REadhusting and getting used to it AGAIN ??

seems to me he looks dehydrated, and if your only feeding him amounts the size of his head, that's def'ly not enough, try the bath and get the heat and humidity up, use an eyedropper to try and get water into him

good luck, any questions you can email me...mmellott@ffcith.com....also, do you have a uvb light?

mmellott Jan 09, 2004 10:11 PM

you can try putting a jar of water with a small fish tank water heater in it with air going into it, that sometimes helps up the humidity....

Giving Him baths will help hydrate him. Water should be luke warm to the touch. If it feels hot to you, it's too hot for him. Mist the cage several times a day and mist him also. That's how you get the humidity. Put the temp back yp to 95-100 on the basking area. As long as He has a cool side to retreat to, he'll be fine. He NEEDS the heat. The Opening of his mouth is him regulating his body temp. He knows how. So Give him the heat he needs. If He doesn't get warm enough, he won't digest his food and he'll lose his appitite. The Setup looks ok. Just make sure He has water at all times. Food items should be no larger then the space between his eyes. I agree that he looks dehydrated. A Bath will do wonders. Also make sure the water only comes up to his chest. Don't make him feel like He's drowning. I need to look at the diet you are giving him again. forgot what you said. I'm not awake yet.... The humidity is at 80%, the temp is 95 in basking and 75-80 in cool area, when hes basking sometimes even if its too hot for him he just sits there with his mouth open and not moving, so Im worried that he might burn himself
I gave him a bath last night, in 92F water, but he didnt even move, he just floated there, after 5 min I removed him and he went to sleep.
