bedding for hatchlings

rttlrvenom Jan 09, 2004 04:09 PM

i have been using paper towels lately with my new corns. After almost 2 week is think that they are problem free and would like to switch the substrate. My sister has this bedding for her rabtits that is called chlorophyll or something like that, it has small pieces but doesent say what kind of wood it is.

do you think i should use this or get some other stuff. what kind of other substrate is ok for a hatchling (i know no pine and cedar) Is aspen ok? How long can it go without being changed. And will a UTH make the substrate to hot (or burn)

thanx
Rv

yes i did do my homework but like usual it is sometimes better to hear it from other experenced persons.

Opinions vary greatly on this forum. I think it is really personal preference that counts. I use aspen shavings. I,ve used others and still do in My larger snakes tanks. I use reptibark in my pythons and boa tanks, actually my wifes snakes. Any way aspen is cheap and the snakes love to burrow in it. I actually have to sift through it to find the little ones. Heat shouldn't be a problem. I spot after every defecation, and change bedding about every month. I'm sure some change more often, but this works well for me.

Just and FYI, that chlorophyl stuff is probably pine treated with chlorophyl from plants if it's high quality. I have heard with lower quality bedding they just dye the pine green. The chlorophyl is supposed to reduce order from rodents or something like that. I don't use it myself but I've seen it in the store. Aspen is probably a better choice with hatchlings. I use papertowels or newspaper, but only because I found out the hard way I am extremely allergic to Aspen. It makes me sad because they really love to tunnel. I've tried Carefresh, but I think it's expensive and it gets too stinky way too fast.

I've used Carefresh for the last year and LOVE it! I also haven't noticed it getting stinky at all. Did you use the bleached (white) Carefresh or the Gray stuff? I use the gray, I like it mostly because it's easily spot cleaned. And I'm not sure, but because it's made from recycled newspaper, should be digestable as well. I tried aspen for a bit, and it does look nice, but I feed them in their cages, so I didn't like feeding on the aspen. (I do put the mice on a paper towel on top of the substrate and watch them eat even with the carefresh, but I'm more comfortable doing this on substrate that's basically paper.)

I also thought recently, of getting a paper shredder for all the papers Rhiannon brings home from school that end up laying on the floor for a week. I thought maybe the shreddings would make good bedding for the younger snakes. Anyone ever tried that?

Carefresh make great Anery camaflauge too

LOL, my daughter is 7 also. I can't believe all the papers she brings home. I think shredded schoolwork would work well as bedding

I've used shredded newspaper in the past but was never impressed by it. It's easier to use a single piece of newspaper, theres less mess and it takes time to sit there and shred paper. If you use your kids papers obviuosly just make sure they don't have alot of ink or marker on them.

If you only have a few Corns I would use Aspen bedding. However once you start to get a large colony of Corns going the price of Aspen begins to add up quickly in my opinion. I only use Aspen for hibernating snakes. Since I get newspaper for free it has become a very good alternative. Yes, it's not as absorbent as Aspen but if you're good about keeping things clean it's no problem.
