Protocal for introduction?

JB71RT Jun 05, 2003 08:21 AM

So my new little guy got here promptly and in good shape, and I am letting him settle in and acclimate to his surroundings. I was wondering about the best way, and best time/age to introduce this male to Ginger my female. This is one aspect I'm not familiar with since I've always just kept everybody separated. What are your thoughts? What is the best and least stressful way to introduce cyclura to each other?

Chase your new iguana around with a rubber alligator so when it see's the other iguana, it will be relieved. (just joking)
The best way to introduce is to set up two separate hide boxes in the cage with two heat lamps and two food and water dishes on opposite sides with a visual barrier in the middle of the enclosure. This way the weaker animal can get out of the way of the dominant animal with out being stuck in its hide box out of fear. Hopefully you have an enclosure big enough to do this with. I have used a 48"x30"x18" enclosure for younger iguanas. If you don't have the room, you may just want to let roam around in a room together. Be around to supervise them the first few times.

Thanks Mark,
I called David Blair yesterday and he said the same thing. I totally rearranged my main cage and put in a divider that doesn't allow eye contact between the basking spots as well as separate food and water. I also added a few more obsticles on the floor. Thankfully, everything went without a hitch! There was a little head bobbing and some posturing by the female, but by the end of the day she had settled down. I still plan on keeping an eye on them for the next few days just to make sure they get along. Seems that I'm more stressed than they are. lol
Thanks Again,
John
