Building a cage with a rock wall - my translation is finally done! See ->

Gunilla Jan 09, 2004 06:34 PM

Wohhoo! My translation is done (hopefully!) and the page about Building a cage with a rock wall is finished (finally!) I am so happy that I finally did it! People here has asked me to translate it for over a year now…!

Please let me know what you think - and *please* let me know if you find any errors or something that you don’t understand. I really do want know!

Translating all those difficult “material” words from Swedish into English is not that easy – believe me. So I need all the help I can get to correct any mistakes.

That is very clever! I really like how you did the cave, and used real cement. I bet that cage will last forever!

My boyfriend saw over my shoulder while I was looking at the page and said, "Hey, we can do that! Let's build one of those!" So I bookmarked the page.

What type of place do you buy the glass doors and rails from? Can you get tham already made like doors, or do you buy the pieces of glass and glue the handles on yourself?

I was wondering the same thing.

I bought Glass and the channels at the glazier (and had them cut it for me and they also smoothed the sides.

The handles were also bought at the glazier, and glued on later. They are easy to put on, the backs of the handles are sticky so you just remove the "cover paper" and glue them on. We have handles like that in Sweden, and I guess you must have them in USA as well.

It is also on the page what material I used, and where I bought it. See under "Material":

I saw that you listed the glass and glass channels, but I somehow skimmed over the part where you bought the handles seperately. I've never heard the term "glazier," but then I've never had to buy custom made glass either, so I'm sure they're around.

Great job on both of them! I just completed a similar tank, but took the easy way out and used a dresser *lol* In the future I definetly plan to use those plans of yours for the design of the actual cage!

Here is a link to the cage that I made.

How heavy does your cage weigh in at? I used tile grout instead of actual cement due to the fact I thought it would weigh alot?

I wish I would have talked to you before I made mine, I would have liked to add in some hooks before everythign dried to decorate the cage. Love that touch!

Also great job on painting the cage. My next project might envolve that!

Great job on the cage AND the translation.

Thanks! I am glad you liked my page! I saw your page earlier and that was inspired me to *finally* translate my page too. I did the same page over a year ago – but in Swedish. I have been planning to translate it for a loooong time, but never got around to it. So *you* inspired me to do that.

Your cage is awesome! Beautiful! I love the way the “rock” look – the sandy color. My background is a little too dark.

No, my cage is actually not heavy at all! I can lift it myself without any problems! (If it wasn’t so BIG that is..!) the layer of cement isn’t that thick, so it doesn’t become heavy. Most of the wall is styrofoam and that doesn’t weight much..!

Once again – thanks for the inspiration!
I am planning to add links to my “building page” then I will definitely add your page there (if that’s ok?) it is always good to see several ideas before you build something like this, I think.

Well im glad I could help! haha

Id love to have a link on your page and I will gladly add you to the top of my page under the custom cage links as well. As you said, I am all for custom cages and having many inspirations. I like how you used cement and I think I am going to use that in my next cage i build. Seems like it would be more sturdy and I would need less layers.

As for the sandy color, twas quite simple. Its sand *laughs* is that cheating? haha

Anywho two thumbs up for the cage man! Good deal!

I sent you a message, but I'm not sure how that works or if it works so I'll just ask here.

My boyfriend and I are thinking of combining the plans from you and Gunilla to make our custom cage. We really like the way it's built into a dresser so we thought about using that for the outside of the cage, and using Gunilla's plans for the rock wall and cave on the inside.

Anyways, the only question I have about the dresser is, what do you do for air ventalation?

Good call! Combine the methods O)

I did recieve your message and I replied. I think I did it right, if not then i sent kingsnake a message haha.

Anywho for ventilation check the step on mysebsite. It is the last step at the bottom of the page.

I just drilled tons of little holes into the plexiglass. After doing that once, I am having second thoughts about it. I think it would be much easier to simply cut out a box on the side of the cage and stick in an air ventallation cover.
