Can you really feed leos roaches? more

bigdee Jan 09, 2004 07:53 PM

I just read in the feeder forum someone talking about feeding roaches to leos. I have hissers that i was feeding the monitor I got rid of but thought they where too big for leos so I was going to get rid of the roaches. I know the baby roaches are small enough but figured I would end up with alot that would be to large. So are there any roaches that they can eat? or what are your opinions about the hissers that i already have.

My guess is they're too big. I was the caretaker for one for about a year for a science teacher I had once. He was set up in a 10-gallon tank made to look natural. Not alot of care obviously --- rehydrated his sponge, changed food when needed (Rarely had to do this... He was given dry cat food). I found him/her to be really fascinating, even though whenever I was around he was just sort of sitting there, since I believe they're nocturnal. They're perfect for that empty 10 gallon laying around...

Yes, but feed lobster roaches. Their healthier than crickets,. and easier to keep aswell.

-Dont stink
-Dont chirp
-No special food requirements
-Very easy to breed

However

-They climb glass.

Be sure to have a tight fitting lid. Dont be discouraged though. They only breed in conditions (if one gets out), far from what a regular home would have (humidity, temps, other requirements, etc). Their most likely to die anyway.

Other than that, their harmless.

Leos can be fed roaches. I would say no with the hissers. They have a hard exoskeleton. Plus they climb glass which makes it hard to contain them. I would stick with non- climbing species such as orange heads, orange spots, discoid, and death heads. The babies of all these species can easily be fed to leos.

I’ve given some orange heads to my leos and they love them. IMHO roaches are the best. They don’t stink, easy to clean, and they bred….well… like roaches.=)

i use to feed my baby hissers but it got to a point where im tired of having to wait for them to be born so im gonna buy death heads or orange headed roahs so i can feed the adult also ....If anyone knows a variety of sites to get them from plz post it

Hissers do seem to be slow producers. Are you going to feed the adult roaches to a leo? The adults are way too big. Death heads are about 3” and orange heads 2”. I think http://www.herpfood.com/ sells death heads. Try doing a search on yahoo, google etc.

Of all those species you listed, which one(s) do you prefer the most?

Of those species I keep the orange heads. If I had a lot more room I would keep all of them. Their care is very similar to one another with the biggest difference being their body size (1.5” to 3’). The orange heads, orange spots, and discoids are all good producers. I have read conflicting info on the death heads being good/bad producers.

So I would have to say I like all 4 species.

That's awesome. I guess I'll have to go with whatever I find first or whichever looks the most agreeable. I'd like to give them a try when I come back from overseas.
