pixie question.....

Jase Jan 09, 2004 09:04 PM

I recently purchased a baby pixie from a pet store and I am using the substrate that the guy at the store recommended; coconut bark. I have noticed that when my frog attempts to catch the crickets he regularly gets a mouth full of the bark and occassionally swallows some along with the cricket. How big is the danger of impaction from this? Should I switch to a different substrate? Thanks!

Im not to sure on how serious of a problem that would be as far as impaction.

But I use the bed-a-beast stuff and I love it. It stays moist for a long long time. My pacmen (plural form? haha) love it. Its so easy for them to burrow in and lets them feel real safe and moist.

Ive heard some say that keeping your substrate too moist will cause the frog to go to the bathroom in it and cause issues. But I have yet to experience that. I also change my substrate once a month as the bed-a-beast comes in a big block and I only use half a block to fill his tank.

It helps if you put a small plate or sheet of plexiglass, or something similar, on the cage floor before feeding. Then, just drop the prey item onto the plate, and the frog can eat it off of that.
Your substrate is the best one available for frogs in captivity!

Thanks for the responses! I will try the plexiglas thing...sounds like an easy fix. I have noticed that he/she/it hasn't used the bathroom in the water dish but I did walk in while it was going in the middle of the cage on top of the substrate. Does that mean I am keeping it too moist? I just removed the mess when it was finished but there may be more I can't see...frog poop looks an awful lot like pieces of coconut bark, lol! Ginevive, you said coconut bark is the best substrate....do you use the shredded kind or the chunks?
