savannah will not eat mice

blevins Jan 09, 2004 11:31 PM

My savannah will not eat mice anymore.He/she will only eat things like chicken, eggs, turkey and stuff I feed by hand. When I drop in a mouse it closes it's eyes and hisses it will not even eat dead one's.It is about 31 inches long and very tame. When I first got it he/she ate mice but will not touch them now.It was about 20 inches when I got it.Is this a bad thing?Whats up with my monitor?

I think it's best to visit a vet with him. It may be dehydration or lack of vitamins/minerals. If he is sluggish and don't walk very well it may be uric acid gout, caused by long term dehydration. I had a female of the same size that also went off food after she had eaten chicks for a while. She weighed about 2.5 Kg, whish is too much.

Make sure yours have fresh drinking water available, and a bowl to soak in if he wants. Also, it's common to keep them too dry, try to raise the overall humidity.

Also, try to give him some insects, one of my savs sometimes just wants a bunch of insects, instead of a mouse.

And get Bennetts excellent book about savannahs:

Savannah book!
